Joe Torre Tells Yanks "No, Thanks,"

So Joe wants to leave the Yanks? I thought I heard it was the Yanks who were gonna fire Joe - obviously I heard wrong.

I can just see Lou Pinella tripping over himself to try and get on their short list.

good for him - let him go somewhere that'll appreciate the man.

The offer was a one-year deal at a significant pay cut, with incentives.

I'm sure they never expected him to accept it. It was just a way to get him to quit, rather than having to fire him and deal with the PR fallout of firing such a well-loved, long-serving employee. (eta: Who took the Yankees to the playoffs for every one of his twelve years.)

Or, depending on how charitable your view of Yankees management is, it was a way of allowing Torre the dignity of making the decision himself.

But I doubt it. The offer was an insult, even though it still would've made Torre the highest-paid manager in the major leagues. Given Steinbrenner's history with managers, it's hard to imagine him providing an easy way out.
