I wish I knew, or I'd be cashing my royalty checks. I'm told mainstream is "a novel with a broad appeal, that encompasses themes and characters that most readers can identify with." That's fairly vanilla. However, I would recommend homework. Practice. Writing. Rewriting. More homework. Honing. More rewriting. A good editor. A better glass of scotch and, in the end, some luck. of course, the luck comes from doing all the other things well.
