So I was at the hospital this afternoon, standing out in the parking lot to make some phone calls about my wife's condition post-surgery (she's fine, for anyone concerned), when it happened.

A man and a woman were crossing the lot, walking toward one of the ticket machines. He was carrying a bag -- hers, I think -- and she was carrying a book. A familiar book. With a familiar red banner across the top...

Yup, the Vintage edition of Before I Wake.

It's never happened to me before. My wife and son saw someone earlier this summer reading the book on a ferry, but I've never run into a reader in the wild like that.

Put a smile on my face (and a ferocious blush, I'm sure!).

I love that! How wonderful you must have felt. :)
I love walking into Starbucks and seeing people reading my stories in the newspaper -- but to have them holding a book one has written.... wow. My dream! So happy you've experienced it.
What did you do? Did they know it was you? Did you say anything?

Hey...that's so cool. Congrats! I do seem to remember a whole bunch of people carrying that same book out of a restaurant once, though. They've been raving about it ever since...in case you're wondering. I don't know how you stopped yourself from running up and accosting them with the story of how it was your baby in their hands...

good to hear your wife is doing well.

What a fantastic experience! Tell us more... did you tell them? Did you feel all giggly and silly? Did you jump up and down? Were you so breathless, you couldn't move? Have you been talking about it ever since? Will you blog about it?

:D

That must be a tremendous feeling. Were you in danger of simply floating away?

Congratulations!!

I'm glad your wife is doing well, it must be difficult to manage with her in hospital. I hope she's home soon!

How fantastic of a feeling! I'm so happy for you!

I'm sure I would have blurted out something stupid like, "Uh.... hi. Guess what? I wrote that book. Yeah.... the one in your hand. So, um, hi!"

I probably would have just followed them a few blocks, grinning like a scary fool, and inspired them to head for the nearest police officer. :D

What an incredible feeling that must be. Go and bask. Congratulations!

Sadly, that's almost exactly what I did, before scurrying off, blushing furiously.

Except I think I said "Hey" rather than "Hi".

I'm glad to hear they liked it -- that was a great morning for me.

But seeing the fabled reader in the wild, not in the captivity of the bookstore or at an event... Wow.

That's a fantastic story...

I'm assuming that the book has your picture on the jacket so that the Reader can see that you weren't just some psycho?

Oh Wow! This is my ultimate writer-fantasy DREAM! I probably couldn't help going up to the people.

"Hey, I see you have (book name). I've been thinking of getting it. How'd you like it?"

Whee!

That's so great!

I used to design car ads for local dealers in Chicago, and whenever I'd see someone reading the paper on the train I'd want to ask them if my ad made them want to buy a car. Fear of their response kept me quiet. But YOU, they BOUGHT yours and are proudly carrying it for all to see! Congratulations!
