Back in the day, before email, it was by phone.

I'm betting many agents still want to deliver the good news that way. It reminds them that a sale is something to be celebrated -- even before the check arrives.

Email. I got it on April 1st, so I was afraid for a moment it was a very cruel April Fool's joke. Then I looked at the send date and realized it had gone out on March 31st, and that my book had really sold.

Phone call with instructions to go out and have a glass of wine to celebrate. I did.

Phone call. My agent called me on the morning I was getting ready to go over and refinance my house. He called about 10 am and said, "Something is happening." At 4:00 that afternoon, quite literally as I was getting ready to put pen to paper to sign the refinancing papers, my cell phone rang. There I am with two bankers and an attorney and my wife, and I say, "I am SO sorry, but I HAVE to take this call."

And that was the call where my agent said, "It sold."

I still refinanced my house, though...

Good ol' phone call.

However, the auction took place, surprisingly, through e-mail.

Phone call. Agent called when she decided to represent me, and called again when the novel sold.

Heh. I got an email that I wasn't supposed to get that read something like 'Do we have contract info for Chicken Warrior yet? I've done the first edit.'

This was an email from editor to publisher and it was a forward, but somehow they forgot to take my addy out. I convinced myself it was all mistake until I received a contract the next day.

Phone call for sale. I knew when I heard her voice she'd made the sale.

Vindication at last.

Phone call letting me know that there were several interested parties. Followed by phone calls by interested parties who wanted to talk to me (that was nerve wracking -- talk about your high stakes interview). Then yet another phone call when the offers were made.

I clicked on an email from my agent. It said, PS, this means you can stop revising.
I was like, wonder what that means? Scrolled down to my email to the previous one from her that we'd received an offer!

My agent, and the publisher, come to my door and give me balloons and then we go out to dinner and discuss the cleverness of me, and then they go off to publish my book and my agent leaves me a briefcase of money, and I go off and write another genius work.

It's a gift and a curse, really.

My agent called me on the very day I'd gone, right, there's no hope.

I got an email telling me the bidding had ended, with a follow-up call.

But it still wasn't as cut and dry as all that. My agent called to tell me she would be presenting me with the two top bids and I'd have to choose. I called back with a decision and that was it. Though I did get a call from my editor at lunch that afternoon. It was so cool to say, "I'm sorry, I have to take this call, it's from my editor..."

Mine was a phone call. On my sister's cell phone, because we were at the beach for a week and at the time, I had no cell, so I'd left my sister's number with my agent.

Very first acceptance for a novel was by regular mail, a nice long letter.
