Since we're such a close knit bunch, I figured no one would mind if I posted this here for all of us YA writers to go crazy over. And since I can't throw Hannah a real party (I totally would if I wasn't going away this weekend) this is the next best thing.

YAY SHADY. YOU ARE THE EPITOME OF AWESOME AND I DEMAND THE RIGHT TO KISS YOUR FEET.

:partyguy: :hooray: :snoopy: :TheWave: :PartySmil

Oh my goodness I was just thinking the other day that if Shady can't get an agent then NONE of us can and there is something very truly wrong with this world!

I'm too excited for this not being me. Can't even imagine what you must be feeling, Shady. I'd go through the roof with glee!!!

Awww, you guys are the sweetest. :)

I'm actually remarkably calm. I canceled my plans for tonight because I want to stay in and just chill. It'll probably be a week before I get any answer, so I'm trying to keep my hopes as low as possible. I'm a very rational person, so I'm doing all right. I had about a ten second jump and scream moment, and now I'm done. ;)

I do keep picturing my books on a shelf at Borders, though....and I like it.

OverTheHills&FarAway
09-29-2007, 01:12 AM
This is ridiculous. Seeing ANY book by ANY person in our YA group would make me the HAPPIEST PERSON ON EARTH OMG I hope it works out!!!!!!!!!!!

And I'm being totally honest when I say that I REALLY want to read Christmastime...ever since I read the query I've been like wow. Amazing. :)

Oh yeah. :D I went to the bookstore yesterday and stuck my hand between the books of the two authors that would fall to either side of my books in the SF/F section. I am such a dork! :e2smack:

When your stuff hits Borders I want pictures! Including ones of you smiling and jumping up and down while pointing to it. :D

I gush about Christmastime at social events. Because I am a loser who can't bear the thought of talking about her own novel, but will nevertheless pimp out her friends' works.

I told my dad. He was all, "I'm eating, don't bother me."

Shady Lane
09-29-2007, 01:15 AM
You're so sweet, Jordan! I'm actually, uh, super-proud of Christastime. It's without a doubt my favorite ms I've written...it just works for me.

Oh, I have a slightly more current version than the one the agent has. Nothing huge has changed, I've just clarified some paragraphs and stuff. When do I mention this? Next email?

About keeping your hopes low- okay I do know a couple of people who got to this stage and didn't get the contract with the agency that was gushing over them BUT all those people are now repped and or (is that grammatical? oh well) have sold. Getting to this point does not guarantee being repped by that agency, though from that letter I'd say your chances are darn good. Once a manuscript starts getting that kind of response it's just a matter of time. So let yourself celebrate.

SOPHIE. I love you. I can't wait to meet you in real life someday. It will be soon!! Haha.

I spent the entirety of an hour talking about it with a writer that I met. She eventually calmed me down and asked, "And what do you write, dear?" I said, "Oh, stuff about fairies. BUT ANYWAY, there's this really cool scene where they're at the funeral and..."

I am pretty frickking awesome, in case you hadn't noticed.

You're the greatest, Bethany. Thanks so much. This is really some of the first positive feedback I've gotten for this manuscript...so it's super exciting.

Soph--you're so weird. :tongue

Thanks for welcoming me. You too Esopha :D

My short stories are varied with a lot of them having a cultural slant but in numerous genres ranging from romances to political to feminist stuff.

My novel length stories are generally humorous romances. YA and Chick Lit perhaps? I'm not sure if all the adult stories can be considered Chick Lit though.

I'm tempted to go back and research and figure out who it is, I think I could figure it out with just genre and a few other hints, but I don't have the energy to go back through everything, plus we'll find out soon enough (not soon enough for her, tonight will be a pretty darn long evening) but instead of snooping I'll just say, GOOD LUCK! and no, reen, it's a real she. :)

Oh, I know it's a real she. I was really just commenting on the impersonal "she" that people use around here and how it confuses me, somewhat.

(I'm also amused that we're discussing real shes and, presumably, false shes.)

Shady Lane
10-04-2007, 03:09 AM
Yeah, it's true....you do generally use 'she' for agents. For babies, too.

Yeah, it's true....you do generally use 'she' for agents. For babies, too.

I've heard lots of it babies, too. As in "aww, it's so adorable." Or people leave out a subject as in "how old?" pretty clever, really.

but enough pronoun chatter, let's talk about agents, kittens, and cake again!

Shady Lane

Speaking of kittens, and getting them...

My mom has an approx. 6-month old kitten that literally showed up on her doorstep a couple of weeks ago looking like a skeleton. She's been veterinarianed (shots, wormed, etc.), is doing well now, and is very friendly. She has a little bit of a twitch sometimes with her head because, as the vet told them, her mother had distemper while pregnant with her (the kitten, not the vet), and apparently she's deaf (again, the kitten, not the vet), but has no health issues that would require medication or anything.

SO, if anyone is interested in a twitchy deaf super-friendly tabby kitten and lives somewhere in or near southern New Jersey, let me know :). All the rescue groups are full, and Mom's not going to take her to a shelter, but they already have 6 cats (4 of which started out as strays).

*steps aside to allow the thread to flow along its regular course*

I *think* I remember reading somewhere that at this particular agency, they like making group decisions, even for personal clients. So I believe (and I could be completely wrong about this) that other agents at said agency will read some of the manuscript sometimes, when they like the idea the agent in question talked about at the meeting.

However, as I said, I could be wrong about that...

It means so much to me to have all you guys pulling for me...you seriously have no idea. Shady Lane
10-13-2007, 02:26 AM
Okay, guys:

Dear Hannah,

Thanks for your patience while we discussed your promising work
in-house. Here's our consensus: your writing talent and narrative
instincts are so very evident, but we don't feel the manuscript is
quite ready for representation. Though I have to regretfully step
aside at this particular juncture, I do hope you'll keep me in mind
for your work as we both move forward. I do so hope to have the chance
to revist your work in the future.

That said, your work brought so many interesting possibilities and
questions to mind. Here are a few I'd like to share, just as food for
thought as you continue to develop & seek placement for this ms:

There's such rich material on offer in CHRISTMASTIME, beautifully
conveyed, but we didn't feel this draft quite fully executed on the
premise and its possibilities for conflict between our three
characters engaged in the world's "holiest sibling rivalry." We think
you might work on raising the stakes of your relationships for each
character and our two families. And, we wondered if more could be done
to really execute on the genre label of "suburban fantasy" you're
going for. Perhaps you can think of these two notes together: look to
raise stakes by upping the ante of the fantastic (the miracles/horrors
Noel brings -- childhood spiders, present-day fish, etc)? Is it just
Noel with 'powers' or also Caitlin? Does Noel's music perhaps heal or
damn? Can Noel's seductiveness & Caitlin's be put to even more work on
Ian? Your threesome reminded me, for better or worse, of movies The
Dreamers & Band of Outsiders, albeit with much different stakes, so I
wanted to see even more focus on the odd symbiosis between characters
in our trinity. As for Ian, can his photography be put to work to
document Noel, Caitlin, their struggle, miracles? I think you could
perhaps more clearly define each of their wants and flesh out suburban
fantasy elements by also thinking about story structure: the alphabet
chapter headings, & compression of letters for final heading, could be
put to work more deliberately to clearly gloss your themes? Finally,
given your focus on the question of the sacred/profane/holy -- I
wonder if the DC setting is giving you enough mileage, or if a setting
in a major 'godless' city like NY, Chicago, Boston, or a god-oriented
city in the Bible Belt, would do more to put pressure on these
relationships?

I hope these questions help as you develop your work, Hannah. It says
so much that your manuscript got me thinking and wondering -- it's
rare, and I'm glad to have this chance to share my thoughts with you.
I sincerely hope I've opened what will be a productive line of
communication between us as you hone your skills and talent.

Looking forward to hearing from you again in the future, Hannah.

My best,

So, damn.

Can you guys help me figure out how to reply?

Azraelsbane

That letter, though - wow! That is excellent, that she was excited enough about the story to put that much thought into it, and to put it all together for you. And it sounds like she is expecting/hoping to hear from you again. That in itself is excellent, so congratulations!

I would suggest to thank her for all the thought she put into your story, and if you plan to implement some of what she suggested, tell her so. Beyond that, I'm just as clueless here :tongue.

Think about what she suggested over the weekend, decide how much resonates with you. Then respond by thanking her for her advice and mentioning some specifics that you think she was right about, and that you are excited about fleshing out. Sorry she didn't offer you representation now, Shady. But I'll add my agreement: make the changes and contact her again. :)

I'm totally going to implement what she suggested. Girl knows what she's talking about.

This is the click. You found the agent you clicked with. Now wow her with your revisions. The perfect match is when the agent sees the merit in your work and then sees what the work needs to make it really shine. This is the test where you show her you can understand her points, you're easy to work with, and you can work with her feedback to create the potential that she sees in your manuscript. And enjoy your honey nut cheerios!

Well, Az is right in that it's good to be cautious, but at the same time, this is the way I see it: an agent's feedback is going to be really valuable 99% of the time and help you with other subs. Plus...if you retain a professional attitude, it's never going to hurt to request a re-read if the agent has already, essentially, declined.

I think you have a great change at this, Shady. If I were you I would make some edits ASAP (but not rushed) and maybe send out a few more queries, just for good measure. You're still movin'.

Babe.

Honey nut cheerios are ambrosia.

Either way, Shady, you've gotten some great feedback that'll help you out in the long run, and you've got a great relationship going with this agent. :) Keep chugging along.

No, don't rush your edits. Let them sit for a week after their done, get a trusted reader. I've seen this situation go both ways.

THIS DOES NOT MEAN YOUR SISTER.

(Even though I think you're an only child?)

I learned this the hard way. (Not the only child thing. The sister thing.)

I agree with bethany. You might want to wait a couple days to start editing, too. I bet you're a little hyped right now...and people always suggest letting edit suggestions wait for a second.

That sounded depressing so I'll add that my beloved Critique Partner worked her butt off on revisions for her dream agent. The dream agent went back and forth giving her no answer, I was scared to death. (turned out she was worried about the market, had another manuscript that wasn't selling in a similar genre I think), Dream agent came through and manuscript sold in days. It was awesome! And inspiring.

Okay, I won't rush them. I'm staring now--can't stop me--but I'll get it read over first.

And Soph, I DO have a sister--she's actually on her way home from college right now--but I think I'll let Alex be the looker.

AND IF ANYONE HERE WANTED TO READ IT OVER AFTER I EDIT OMG I WOULD BE SO GRATEFUL.

Esopha

Wellll I would love for you to read it. :D

Oh, rep points. I always forget about rep points. Wow, all these things people are saying about me behind my back. Or behind everyone else's back. Who called me a freakout? Hmmm...*reading rep points obsessively*.

Hope my edit will be helpful. How long is it, BTW? 80ish?

Don't thank me. I'm just racking up brownie points for when Soul Threshers is done. :D That book will need crit from people who read mainstream YA, because of the narrator's voice.

Oh, awesome.

I'll read yours too, Esopha, when you're done. I know all you guys are great.

I have a synopsis in the 'share your stuff' query section, if anyone is bored (or just generous). I'm having real trouble with it.

I'm looking into it presently.

Shady Lane

So here's what I did.

I broke down the comments section of her email, isolated each piece of advise, and marked how I'm going to fix it.

There's such rich material on offer in CHRISTMASTIME, beautifully
conveyed, but we didn't feel this draft quite fully executed on the
premise and its possibilities for conflict between our three
characters engaged in the world's "holiest sibling rivalry."

We think
you might work on raising the stakes of your relationships for each
character and our two families.

Noel needs them to accept him so he can come to D.C. for the music.
Ian needs to connect with Noel before he leaves for good.

More spiders!!
The lightening thing--Ian wants to try it too.

Is it just
Noel with 'powers' or also Caitlin? Does Noel's music perhaps heal or
damn?

Sedation quality--in the best possible way.

“It can all be yours, Caitlin.”

As for Ian, can his photography be put to work to
document Noel, Caitlin, their struggle, miracles?

More photographs!! More more more. Highlight the plot progression.

I think you could
perhaps more clearly define each of their wants and flesh out suburban
fantasy elements by also thinking about story structure: the alphabet
chapter headings, & compression of letters for final heading, could be
put to work more deliberately to clearly gloss your themes?

Bible quotes
Finally,
given your focus on the question of the sacred/profane/holy -- I
wonder if the DC setting is giving you enough mileage,
Make D.C. work
I love D.C
MAKE IT WORK
MAKE IT DIRTYYYY
or if a setting
in a major 'godless' city like NY, Chicago, Boston, or a god-oriented
city in the Bible Belt, would do more to put pressure on these
relationships?

Haha, so...that's what I'm currently working with.

OMG Look what I missed because I was napping!!! HOLY COW, Shady! I am so frickin bummed she didn't offer you an immediate "Yes," but at the same I am thrilled for you because I really think this is the one, and I think she wants to work with you until this is awesome! I bet she wanted to work with you right now and sign you but her other agents were like, "Dude, this girl is 16, how do we know she has the maturity to edit? Better reject her, but tell her what you want and if she can do it, then we'll take her on."

I BET THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED. :)

Shady Lane
10-13-2007, 05:01 AM
Haha, I sure hope so!

I'm editing right now, and super enjoying it. The structure of the ms is totally edit-friendly. All I have to do is plug in a few scenes and strengthen a few themes throughout the ms. OH GOD IT'S SO EASY AND IT WILL SO IMPROVE THE MS.

The only thing I'm not doing is changing the setting. It's just, I know D.C, and I love it, but I didn't make it as strong as I could. If I fix D.C. in the ms, I won't have to change the setting and everyone comes out happy.

I think leaving DC is a good idea. I used San Francisco in my manuscript because it was the only huge city that I know reasonably well. I had to do a little tweaking to make it fit, but I think it's better than using something I don't know and having someone go, "Hey, it's not like that..."

Shady Lane

I am finding SUPER SWEET Bible quotes for my chapter heading.

Like

“Joshua son of Nun, who had been Moses' aide since youth, spoke up and said, ‘Moses, my lord, stop them!’

“But Moses replied, “Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all the Lord’s people were prophets and that the Lord would put his Spirit on them!’”
