I have to buy a present for my mum's birthday (she's in her late 40s) and I'm always the one who buys books for everyone.

Any suggestions for anything particularly good? I'm thinking tear-jerkers usually work with her.

I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith.

Not a tear-jerker, but plenty of emotion in this modern classic.

Opening lines:

"I write this sitting in the kitchen sink. That is, my feet are in it; the rest of me is on the draining board, which I have padded with our dog's blanket and the tea-cosy."

Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers is the best book I've ever read. Very tear jerking. It is a Christian/Historical Romance.

I just finished The Kite Runner, excellent tear jerker.

The Magic Toyshop, or just get her a copy of Burning your Boats (both by Angela Carter).

Jodi Picoult is WONDERFUL. I also highly recommend "Pieces of My Sister's Life" by Joy Elizabeth Arnold if you need a suggestion for Christmas.
