Hi. I'm not sure if this is where I should post it, but here we go.

I am thinking about translating a Japanese book. I was thinking simply to translate a few chapter and send a query saying how many copies it sold in Japan and a summary. But then a friend told me it won't work like that. Does anyone know how it works?

Has it been published already? Are you the author?

I'm no expert on this, but I believe whoever controls the foreign rights to that book (whether it is the Japanese publisher or the author) is the one with the right to market overseas. At least, that is my understanding about how an U.S. book winds up translated and published in other countries. I assume it works similarly in reverse.

But I'm sure someone who knows more will come along to help you!

Hi Rachel, thank you for the post. And sorry, I didn't post this right. I posted another thread above, and clarified my question.
