View Full Version : Flash fiction carnival

I haven't done a lot of writing, barely any at all, in the last couple of months. It's no secret and I've been going through bouts of irratibility, contentment and ignorance.

But lately blogging has come back to me. I'm blogging from work, via email, and it's bringing it back. So now blogging seems like a crutch I should rely on to get me moving back to 'real' writing.

Do any of you remember Tastes of the Darkness? It was a horror flash fiction blog carnival I ran. It had a few issues, produced some interesting fiction but sadly lost momentum and I can't seem to get it going again.

I think one of the main pitfalls of the carnival was it was focused on only one genre, and during my pondering over not writing, I've come to my own conclusion about leaving my identity as a genre writer and to just write fiction.

So, I was looking for a show of hands that would be interested in a flash fiction blog carnival. Basically, we all write a piece of flash fiction on our blogs and the host, another blog, shall publish a collection of links to these pieces as a way of publicizing our blogs and exercizing our writing muscles.

I'm going to post a link to this in Suddenly too, see if there's any interest from our flash fiction writers.

And yes, I'd be interested. :)

Yeah, that'd be a great idea Cath.

Far out, 9 people in less than a day.

One question, should we have it themed? Like a prompt, image, or 'subject' to focus around?

Twizzle
09-19-2007, 03:46 AM
good question.

I'm totally up for it -- even if there's no theme.

valeenc
09-19-2007, 05:28 AM
I personally would LOVE to have someone give me a prompt. I've been so focused on my WIP lately that I could use a kick in the pants to get something started. I will happily do whatever the majority decides, however, because I like this idea muchly.

bsolah
09-19-2007, 05:45 AM
Awesome Virginia; it's so great to have enthusiastic people. I really need you guys to keep it up and give me the kick up the ass I need.

I think a theme would be good so it gives our stories some connection to each other rather than just a random collection of flash fiction.

So, I'm up for theme suggestions as well. I'd suggest one myself but everything in my head at the moment is politics and that'll scare off some people.

Thanks for the kick up the bum.

I can set up the invite post on my blog tomorrow at work, and then set a deadline, say two weeks. In the meantime, people should suggest themes.

Thanks Bill, we have our first entry. Keep them coming. I want to try and write mine today at work :D

What are the rules? I've got a chapter from my book that could be quickly worked into a piece of flash fiction. And since it involves an unexpected kiss, like Bill's piece, perhaps we've got our theme!

bsolah
09-25-2007, 10:02 AM
The rules are to post a piece of less than a thousand words onto your blog on the theme: which is beginnings according to my invite post.

Feel free to work a scene from your novel into a piece, but maybe you'd want to write something new and not waste your novel on the web.

bunnygirl
09-25-2007, 10:13 AM
Most of the novel is already on the web, so it's no big deal. But it's not a beginnings theme, so I'll have to think of something else. I'm in more of an editing mindset right now than a creative one, so we'll see if I can come up with something for this.

I am very excited about this and finally my account activation was completed (Thank you Mac! I hate AOHell...) so I can respond! I would love to participate, but I'm curious: are multiple entries allowed? ;-)

bsolah
09-26-2007, 06:16 AM
Welcome Talia, glad you're interested in participating.

It's probably best that we keep it to one entry per person.

bsolah
09-27-2007, 09:16 AM
What happened to everyone?

We had 12 people polled as interested, and only one entry so far.

Granted, I'm guilty too. I will do mine before the end of this weekend.

Please indicate here if you're planning to submit something.

And when is that deadline, again?

Is everyone posting that they've added their story in here? Or are they just sending it to Ben?

Also, Bayou Bill! Is that your smiling kitty up there in your post? I have a particular fondness for orange-flavored felines and that kitty looks just lovely. I love the smile!

I wanted to give this a boost since I believe there's time left for folks to send Ben their flashes about beginnings.

And yo! Ben! You've ruined me, man. I've now concluded that I need to post a bit of my creative work in my blog each week and it your fault! Posting that flash got folks a poking at me a bit to put up more of my non-bloggy writing and so now I've decided to do it.

Heaven help me...

Isn't that a great smile? I can't help grinning everytime I see the fool thing. That's a photo I found on the 'net. However, I've provided room and board (no one really "owns" a cat, of course) for a yellow tabby that looked very much like that one.

Hmmm...it didn't seem to receive the response it was meant to. Everyone seemed interested, but just wondering whether or not people are reading and commenting. :(

I admit I need to get to reading them all too, but I promise I will and leave comments. We even got mac to post an announcement but still not much comments.

What Talia said, me too. My only excuse, other than being no-account and forgetful, is that the Blitz got in the way. Yeah, not much of an alibi, but it'll have to do.

ps: It has been accomplished. Some very good stories.

Well, I cheated and commented on a few that I found out about early. I have to get to the others while I'm getting laundry done today.

Twizzle
10-11-2007, 10:53 PM
Um, I'd started. I've commented on a few and read them all. It's just been a busy week. They were all great, and very different. Just what it should be.

bsolah
10-12-2007, 03:06 AM
Excellent. I'll hopefully get to reading them today during work, otherwise the weekend.

Also, we need to start thinking about the next edition. I think we should rotate the hosting and at the end of each edition, someone volunteers to host and starts a new thread, saying another two weeks after publication of the carnival so that makes it monthly?

What do you guys think?

TaliaDownUnder
10-12-2007, 03:40 AM
I think those are fantastic ideas, Ben. Don't want to make it weekly or, really, anything less than monthly or people will be discouraged. At any rate, I'd be happy to host at some point as well. Not the next one, as I'm struggling with migration and the like and wouldn't want to let it fall by the wayside, but maybe the next time!

What if I don't have a blog but would like to particpate?

bsolah
10-12-2007, 05:55 AM
Good question. The carnival is based around linking to other blog posts, so if you could find a blogger that's willing to let you 'guest post' on their blog and post your piece on there's, you could do that.

soma
10-12-2007, 07:18 AM
Rotating hosting sounds like a good option to me, provided other people are willing to go along with it. I'd be happy to host anytime.

valeenc
10-14-2007, 11:54 AM
Gad, I'm still playing catch up. I will finish reading and commenting TODAY, by golly!

Also, I'm willing to host at some point too. I've added Creative Thursday to my blog already, so doing a monthly Flash Carnival is very appealing to me.

bsolah
10-14-2007, 03:47 PM
Yeah, didn't get to comment got busy with other stuff. It seems like lots of people are willing to host the carnival. Anyone have any idea how we're going to decide?

soma
10-15-2007, 12:08 AM
Hmm...

Draw straws?
Go alphabetically?
Go by chronological order in which people posted their stories?
Have the last host pick a number and the others try to guess it?

bsolah
10-15-2007, 04:20 AM
Maybe we should go by who posted first. Since Talia didn't want to host the next one, let's say Soma, Virginia, then Talia?

Soma, you need to start a new thread here and post an invite post on your blog next Monday. Theme is up to you, but I suppose people can suggest themes.

soma
10-16-2007, 02:36 AM

10-16-2007, 11:23 PM
Okay, okay. I finally finished commenting on everyone's story. I mistakenly thought I'd done more than I had and I most profoundly apologize for not finishing sooner.

So, the 22nd huh? Lordy. Well, I'm in, of course.

Thanks again, Ben. And everyone!

bsolah
10-17-2007, 05:37 AM
Thanks Virginia for your comment. It really hit the nail on the head with what my piece was missing.

Again, sorry for not getting to commenting as I've been smacked with a ton of work at work, plus I got a request for one of my short stories for this awesome horror anthology dealing with homophobia which is really exciting - oh and I've commited suicide by deciding to do NaNoWriMo.

Ack! Can't wait for the 22nd.

valeenc
10-17-2007, 12:32 PM
Gracious, Ben! I think you'd best take up meditation if you don't do it already.

And yay! My comment was useful. I was worried I didn't put it in a way that was clear but if you got what I meant then all is good.

Now remember Ben, breathe deeply and focus on nothing... ommmmmmmmmmmmm...
