I've decided to take a new approach to reading and dissect the books I read for their constituent parts and the like. I suppose the best way to do this would be to start with shorter works and work my way up, which is why I am asking for everyone to suggest some novellas to read. I've read The Metamorphosis and Notes from Underground, and I know about Of Mice and Men. I bought Seize the Day by Saul Bellow yesterday. So, if anyone has any suggestions for some novellas of literary quality, just tell me.

Yes, Heart of Darkness is the king of novellas.

Also,

The Old Man and the Sea

The Pearl

Gatsby is very short, maybe not a novella.

Ditto for The Outsiders

Candide

Catcher in the Rye

The Secret Sharer

Check out some short plays, too:

Our Town

A Long Day's Journey Into Night

A Doll's House

Peter Pan

This thread's a little old but I thought I'd get in on the action, although there's some great suggestions here.

Catcher in the Rye is a novella?

"Rise High the Roof Beam," JD Salinger

"A Clockwork Orange" Anthony Burgess

"Pedro Paramo" Juan Rulfo, actually this is a novelita :)

"Laughter in the Dark," Nabokov

I love Notes from the underground and Of Mice and Men...two of my favs.

My absolute favourite novella of all time...one I've read about 15 times and will never tire of:

TOO LOUD A SOLITUDE by BOHUMIL HRABAL. Beautiful, beautiful book. It's only about 85 pages long...a one sitting book.
