THE FIRST LINE describes itself as: The longest running, fully independent journal of 100 pages or less published in North Texas every three months. And while they don't pay a lot ($20) it is a print publication by a legit outfit (I think). Deadline for submissions is 11/1/7.

Here's what MIGHT interest some "flashers." Length 300-3000 words.

As the name implies, they give you the first line, you give them the rest. Here's the current first line: After nine years of marriage, Mary knew that the holidays were not a good time to ask her husband for a favor.

Just so you know, this is the same outfit that also cranks out an annual "Workers Write" anthology series that will use one of my stories in their upcoming "Tales From the Clinic" issue.

Ok, so, I checked the website (Oct 2008). "While not the intended effect, the outcome was surprisingly satisfying."

Hmm, not what I would call an inspirational/catchy first line, being a “swiftly”.

Has anybody else tried this?
