Holy sh*t Batman!
This is truly the stuff of nightmares...

All the spider phobics out there, it's not such a good idea to read this story...
seriously -- I just stopped screaming! I'm quite sure the neighbors think I'm being murdered and have rung the police.

Gahhhhh!!!

I don't know what this story doesnt ring true for me.

If it is true, then I think he was must have wanted to die. Because who else would let a black widow loose, unless to beckon death.

I just killed another one of those suckers!! It's a bad year for Black Widow spiders -- they're freaking everywhere, and I'm sure I don't have to explain what happens when one of those little buggers bites a wienie on the tip of his nose!!!

Oh is *that* a black widow?

Those things are in my pot plants. We call them button spiders. I thought they could only kill children?

What??? Where??? Exactly where in the US are they 'everywhere'? Before I get on a plane. Please tell me there's none in Florida or San Diego.

Oberon

They are everywhere. They like to hide, you don't see them too often. If you find a really messy looking, really sticky web, that could be a black widow's. They used their webs in bombsights in WWII. They only bite when seriously bothered. We had them in Oregon, in Burbank, now in Palm Springs. What I want to know, is what the hell was that guy doing, keeping termites!?

I have a friend that kept scorpions. He used to play with them. Maybe the guy was just walking his spider or something. That's the thing about a Black Widow spider. You can train them forever and you still can't trust them.

Actually, sky diving is quite sane. Unlike driving down a freeway with 500 other folks flitting along at 75 mph in 3,000 lb aluminum cans. While they are talking on their phones, reading, eating, putting on makeup, turning aroudn to scream at the rowdy kids in the back seat, watching the DvD in the dash and generally doing anything but paying attention to driving.

:D

It is, very sane. You should try it. It's freakin' fun.

We don't have poisonous spiders here, thank god. I expect to see a version of that story on CSI next season. Ick.

Ahh, I've done it. I just didn't know I was afraid of heights until I got up there. That's not the sort of discovery you want to make about yourself on the way down. :)

All in all, though, I think I'd skydive solo and high on nutmeg tea rather than hang out in a room with a black widow, mild-mannered or no. I just don't want to go out because I happened to offend something that small and creepy.

I wish these little suckers weren't moving into my state. *sigh*

It's not the heights that worry me. It's that sudden stop at the bottom if the main and reserve chutes fail. :D

Of course in the military I did 500 foot jumps out of a helicopter. Main only as in that short of distance if it fails well.... let's just say it will be a short ride.

Heh spiders aren't crazy. I knew a kid once that kept a cobra in a glass cage in his dorm. That's nuts.

That would be a whip scorpion (http://www.kendall-bioresearch.co.uk/whipscorp.htm). It smells funny, but no sting.

Texas and Mexico have some AWESOME creepy crawlies! Black Widows! Brown Recluses! Scorpions! Poisonous Biting Puss Caterpillars (http://health.yahoo.com/topic/emergency/resources/article/healthwise/popup/zm2296;_ylt=AqRaoWaE8ruPgTewi38K.XDeNs4F) , info here: http://health.yahoo.com/topic/emergency/resources/article/healthwise/tm6502

also, tex-mex snakes are the best snakes outside of australia.

No! I want to see it on Bones! Trust me, it would be a much better story there.

And Dama? Have you ever heard of a (and I'm going by what my friend in Mexico called it) Cara del Nino? Or the Babyface spider? I'm not sure if it's exactly a spider or not, I only saw one once and was told to leave it the hell alone, 'cause it can kill small children.

Ugly thing, lives in the ground and damn near impossible to kill. Apparently you can step on it and in a defense mechanism or something, it will just reinflate itself. I remember what it looked like, but I can't for the life of me find a picture of it now... anywhere.

I can understand the hundreds of spiders, snakes and other typically unpleasant crawlies having a big feast at the expense of a dead guy, but a gecko? That's just sick.

Yeah, he should stay in his office and just sell insurance.
