I'd love to have your help--if you know of a market that accepts life story writing, please post it in this thread. I've been perusing some old threads in AW, and I found this site:

http://www.writingtoheal.com/pew/markets.html

It has quite an index you can browse to see which publication might be the best fit for your work.

Front Porch Syndicate

Pay varies from $25 to $75, depending on length. This magazine would be a great fit for the shorter pieces, usually 500-800 words. Here's the submission guidelines website:

http://www.commonties.com/blog - Common Ties publishes personal stories on a variety of themes. They usually pay $100 to $200. I've published one story with them.

This looks like a good one!

Accepts only snail mail and very hard to break into, but quite a feather in your cap if you can do it.

Found a few great markets this week...

Nerve.com (for controversial or racy topics)
www.uwmag.com (Underwired) for women's topics
and www.skirt.com (another women's personal essay market.)
Also women on writing (www.wowmag.com?) is holding a personal essay contest in conjunction with Skirt! I have to check all these links against my records and see if they are correct. I'll be back in a bit!

Most of these posts go back to 2007. I wonder how many changes there have been since?

I've had pretty good success with literary journals. You can find many of these on the Poets and Writers website:
http://http://www.pw.org/literary_magazines?apage=*

Be sure to take note of their reading periods.

Sorry to say they no longer accept unsolicited submissions.

FYI - This journal has some amazing memoirs in it... visit the site if only to read the journal, even if you don't submit to it. and the submission time is open again too. There is no submission fee and they give awards to the top 3 memoirs submitted for that time period. They gather submissions only twice a year.

Thanks for the lead. It would be great to be published by a publisher and not to have to self-publish and self-promote, even though I have enough experience to do so.

Hi,
I visited your blog. Some of the pics at the first are not appearing for me. Just check to see if it's my computer or if there's really a problem.
Good luck.

The link gets a 404 error, but there is an option to go to their homepage. Thanks for the info.
