I'd like to know if there is a standard page count for a chapter. :wha

A friend (an english teacher) said anything under 25 pages is okay per chapter. Another friend says there is no standard. She read a book with 10 chapters and each chapter was about 35 pages long. :shrug

What is acceptable? :ack

Can a chapter have as much as 30 pages to it?:coffee

How long is a piece of string? :nerd

A chapter should be the length it needs to be. Leaf through a few of your favorite books and see how the author makes the transition between chapters (Cliffhanger/resolution? Location change? POV change?).

Some authors manage relatively equal chapters while others have wildly varying lengths. The key, as always, is to keep the reader turning the pages, so do what works for your story.

A chapter is a story unit bigger than a scene but smaller than a part.

There's no requirement that your novel have chapters at all, let alone that they be of some certain length. Chapters range from zero words (in Tristram Shandy) on up to Really Really Long.

My chapters tend to average about 30 pages. They seem to work. The general advice is, if it works, don't worry about it.
