Scalzi's Essays on Writing

Thanks, I needed to laugh about this.

Tonight a well-meaning friend who has loving confidence in my writing ability told me, "well you can get rid of that ugly living room furniture and get everything new when you publish your book!"

I've already explained to her the publishing cycle, but she refuses to remember it could take up to two years to see any real cash if I sold the puppy tomorrow.

She's got it in her head I'm gonna get a six-figure "shut up you bastard" (per the article cited) windfall.

I'm optimistic, really I am. I obey the "talent is fueled by discipline" maxim. But I know too much about the publishing business to stick my head in the sand.

Ah well. The work is the reward.

Writing Again

I never let people know when I sell anything. My first novel I got a $1,500 advance on. Never saw a reprint. Never saw another penny.

People actually asked me to buy them cars. Others wanted to know why I hadn't packed up and moved to Hollywood yet.

There was no convincing them.

I just have to wonder what kind of coffee shop that guy hangs out in?!

:rofl

The one I get is "Won't you be happy when you sell your book and you can quit your job?"

:rofl :rofl :rofl

PS - discovered Scalzi through hanging out here. Brilliant.

:thumbs Great article! :rollin

I liked what he said: "Just because you're right doesn't mean you should be a d*** about it."

Good advice for *all* situations! ;)
