Many things said in threads over the past many months, and things I've come to realize about myself while talking to people here and in "real life" have me wondering . . .

Are you ever embarassed to admit liking something? Say a program on television, or a movie most people around you mock? If you sit down in front of the TV for an hour every week with a program that honestly entertains you, and gives you great enjoyment, but has no "redeeming qualities" or you've heard people make fun of it - does that embarass you?

And if so - Why?

I suppose it's basic human instinct to not want public association with something your peers don't agree with. But do you change YOUR perception of someone when you find out what they watch or enjoy?

I don't mean to turn this into True Confessions or anything - I'm just sitting here on the back deck with the laptop, after having just watched a British television show on DVD that I'd kill to discuss - but realized I'm too afraid to ask if anyone here knows it - in case it seems silly.

And that, in and of itself, is a bit silly.

No?

I have a secret weakness for some MTV and MTV-style (somewhat) programming, e.g. 'Laguna Beach', 'South of Nowhere'.

Oh, now, you know you have to tell us what the show was! 'Footballers' Wives?' 'Bad Girls'? 'Keeping up Appearances'? 'Torchwood'?:)

Not a fan of 'so-bad-it's-good' telly, myself, but once I was stuck in Holland for months and became a (temporary) fan of some old dross called ''Allo, 'allo'! The shame. In my defence, everything else on the TV was in Dutch and I dropped it like a radio-active brick when I got safely back to Blighty.

Not so much these days, but when I was in high school and college I would have ripped out every hair on my head rather than admit I was a trekkie. :D

And in college writing classes I learned pretty fast not to admit I enjoyed reading SF/F. Even now, admitting it to people I don't know well still gives me a bit a bit of a twinge, remembering the disgusted looks I got from professors and classmates.

Now I have no shame. Not even about liking the Thong Song.

Which British show are you watching, MM? That would be a good start for a conversation.

Yes, well I'll just admit it then - it's Primeval.

Primeval.

Yep. Loved it. Went to all the trouble of ordering it from Amazon UK and had to watch it on the laptop so I could set that player to Region 2.

Primeval.

And I loved it. So there.

:D

Oh yeah. I like some reality shows, which is painful to admit. Surreal Life and Celebrity Fit Club. Iwathced that one on VH1 a few years back abouta sorority too. I even found myself morbidly curious who would win on Flavor of Love. (OH GOD.) I only watched the last episode though, I swear. I am even embarrassed around Mr. groove. The thing is I look at reality shows with disdain, so when I find myself wanting to watch one I feel dirty some how. I guess there is a certain amount of voyerism involved. I like Celebrity Fit Club becuase I struggle with fitness and I kinda feel like I can relate to them, that we're going thorugh it together. Sureal life? I watched the first season becuase of Vince Neil. I watched the 4th(?) Becucase of CC Deville, so I don't just watch those if I don't like the people on them. The thing that bugs me is the first seasons of those shows can be rather thoughtful. BUt I haven't watched any of this season of Celebrity Fit Club becuase they are doing that thing, where they just try to get people riled up for the sake of drama instead of just showing real people doing real things. Oh and hubby does rib me about it. ;) I also like some new pop music that gets some snickers from hubby. Like Pussy Cat Dolls.

other.
I am dead to shame when it comes to culture, pop or not. I'm so happy when I enjoy something, that I'm willing to tell anybody about it. There's so much out there that I just don't enjoy for whatever reasons.

I heart Battlestar Galactica. I heart Nabokov too. I heart Prince, and I heart Satie. My heart is roomy.

Very few here in the US even know it exists. Only 6 eps in series 1, aired in February, I believe. I can't even figure out how I found out about it, but I was hooked instantly.

I used to be self conscious about stuff like that, but I've reached an age where it really doesn't matter to me if someone thinks I'm a dolt for watching So You Think You Can Dance or Hell's Kitchen or whatever.

You can do that? Oh that opens the door to so many things!

You see, that's how obsessed I became after only just realizing this show existed - I went so far as to learn MOST laptop DVD players can be set to whatever region you want - and you can change them back - but you only get 5 changes - after that it's set to whatever you were using.

I have two laptops, and really don't watch DVD's on either, but figured I'd set one to 2 and leave the other at 1.

Then I ordered from Amazon UK - after figuring out the exchange rate wasn't gonna kill me - and there you go.

BeeGees soundtrack Saturday Night Fever
I get stupid-happy when it's on the radio.
I know all the words.
I freaked when my cd got scratched.

*sigh*

I wish Beatle Mania would be ressurected--live version.

Britain's CNN, News, MorningWatch vs our crap FoxNews. There. It's out.

Nothing wrong with Torchwood. Nothing wrong at all. I love it. And Doctor Who.

But what am I actually embarrassed to admit I like? Hmm...I really can't think of anything. Although, given the choice between some trashy chicklit and a Kazuo Ishiguro novel, I know which I'd read in public. Which is strange, considering what I write...and it's nothing like Ishiguro's work, put it that way.

So glad I'm not alone in the Amazon UK ordering. I'm purchasing first season ROME so I can be ready for when season II comes out--next summer?

Of course, the thing is, there's absolutely no reason for anyone to be embarassed about anything - we all have different tastes and see things other people don't see.

I hate reality shows - but that's not completely true because I love Top Chef and Project Runway. Soccer Mom and I talk about those two every week. I can't say WHAT I like about those two, but they're the only two I watch. And watching them gives me pleasure.

Maybe it's not Hello Kitty porn, but pleasure nonetheless :D

Nah, you should only be embarassed if you watch it now. On DVD.

Every week :D
