Hey, I'm the first one here! So I get the big stick, right? ;)

Glad you started this, AnnieC. It's not even six am, and I've written three words so far.

Oh.

Oh my.

Ow! How'd you get three sticks?? I still only have one! ;)

I let yesterday slip away word-wise :e2cry: but worked out a nasty plot knot that's been bugging me on the WNQIPY (work not quite in progress yet). So I'm good to go for later today. *cracks knuckles*

Yardwork bonanza, plus rain/windstorms. Lots and lots of sticks here for the taking. :tongue

But:Sun: for cracking plot knots!

GW -- wait, you're worried about having only 3 words at 6 a.m., or you're just up and writing that early? Either way, :Wha: (quoth the non-morning-person!)

1,000 new words so far. It's a bit info dumpy, but I'll clean it up on the rewrite.

You have permission to poke me (just with one stick!) until I announce I have finished my synopsis. I HATE synopsis.

ETA: wrote 334 words of a new short story. It's gonna be a longer work, not a flash piece. And I didn't work on the synop. Poke away.

AnnieColleen

740 here.

Synopsing sounds ugly; I guess I'm lucky to have nothing to synopse yet! Um, where did I put that stick now...

Oh, and :Sun: for new words and new stories!

JDCrayne

Alas, I did not get any scintillating prose done today. I decided I had to back off and consider motives and character relationships. If I'm going to knock off somebody, I like to have a good reason for doing it. So, I am just checking in!

:Sun: for your 740 words Annie.

Plotting is good, Dian. No new words yet today (it's only 7:30. cut me a little slack). But after I logged off, I got a new idea for a short and wrote a couple hundred longhand. I'll type it in and get a count later.

I think I need to be in for this month, simply because I need constant poking with a big stick to get any work done.

Ultimately I run out of excuses not to write (did somebody say 'easily distracted'?) So far no words for July, but we are only on the 3rd.

Can you stockpile your 500 words a day? If I write 3500 words on Sunday, will that make up for not writing anything during the week???

And what if they're not terribly good words? Do they still count?

Shara

Good Word
07-03-2007, 05:59 PM
Shara, welcome.

ALL words count. What if you just work on daily goals? If you don't make it one day, the next is a clean slate. The "stockpiling" can be a setup for failure.

Every day is fresh, and every word counts.

And there's a nice group of supportive people here to hang out with. :)

Hi Shara! :Sun: This is a fun thread, and it really does make a difference in your output. And don't worry if your words on any day don't strike you as being very good -- mine regularly stink, and like GW said, all words count. :)

Annie and JD, great job.

For me 804 yesterday -- on the now-WIP! That was my opening scene. I can tell it's not great but it's a start. Plus 162 on a flash fic piece I'm working on.

:e2poke: Soccer Mommmm...

ETA: everybody feel free to poke me with a stick too. I want to keep my momentum up this time.

1300 words tonight!:hooray:

I chickened out of going to my aerobics class (big scary thunder storm put me off!) so I made a deal with myself that if I wasn't going to exercise, I had to spend time writing. So at least I could feel virtuous in some other way.

Haven't written anything in three months :-/ On the other hand, I finally came up with a title for the story I've been meaning to send out into the wilds and printed it out with the determination to do a first round of mail tomorrow.

I'll go write my 500 words now.

Wow, way to go all! Looks like July will be a good month!

Now, me, I just added 1353 to my WIP tonight...

that I'd written ages ago, but I finally got to the place where that scene fits...

but this puts me over my guesstimate back at the beginning for how long this thing would be (80K), and the story's not near done. But then, I know I have to chop quite a bit from the beginning (dropped a character I thought would be major, among other things), so I s'pose it'll even out. And this one moves things along to the next major piece of action.

Ok, right. Off to add new words this time...

Not been writing for too long now, so decided I really need to get back to it. Also thought it would be a good idea to play in other parts of the board. So tonight I worked a little bit on a couple of stories.

564 on the first.
472 on the second.

I like the first one the best so may stick with that one. Oh, and can I have the whip instead of the stick? I seem to need that one more. :D

The good news: over 8000 today.

The (possibly) bad news: a whole new section of the novel opened up and (1) I don't know if that's a good thing or not and (2) it's going to take me a while longer to finish it.

Will Lavender

Can you stockpile your 500 words a day? If I write 3500 words on Sunday, will that make up for not writing anything during the week???

I definitely think you can "stockpile" words.

Coincidentally, I'm on the Weight Watchers diet at the moment. On this diet, you can stockpile calories. You can overeat one day as long as you eat within your calorie limit the next. And it works: I've lost 13 pounds in about 5 weeks.

Same with writing. If you have trouble getting pen-to-paper (or words-to-monitor in most cases) one day, just write like crazy the next to make up for the slippage.

I think a finishing line goal is good. It makes you can accountable for the work and keeps you trudging forward. If you write 2000 words every weekday, for instance, as I'm trying to do, then you should be able to write an 80,000 word novel in two months, which is how long it took me to write my first.

Same shape I'm in, AC.

I've actually just come up with, sort of out of the blue, a new narrator. I have 225 pages of one voice, and then here comes this second voice, a very minor character, who charges into the narrative.

My litmus test is always, as I'm writing, "Would I want to read this?"

And I don't know if I would like that sort of intrusion.

But now I've got about 30 pages of that second voice, so I guess it's onward and upward.

AnnieColleen

And 962 tonight.

Yeah, I ran out of steam with that character halfway through, after alternating stories to that point. I know full well I wouldn't want to read a lot of what I have to this point...but if I go back to tinker now, I'll never hit THE END. I want to finish, never mind how messy, and then go back with the pruning shears and whatever else it takes. This is my training-wheels book, so I can do that. ;)

763 words today.
I decided, after an abortive experiment, that trying to writing a mystery without knowing in advance who the killer is, and what the motive is, simply does not work for me. I took off some time to plot out the where, why, how, and who and now I feel MUCH better about it. "I know where I'm going," as the old song goes.

Hey, I'm on WW too! I'm on the Core plan and I've lost 11 lbs in about the same length of time! I agree about stockpiling words. Except that I'm more inclined to the "catch up" mode. If I don't write my 500 one day, I try to make up for it in the next couple of days. It makes me feel virtuous. :tongue

1000 words tonight!

Most of which involve a dialogue between two characters that is kind of taking me by surprise!

I like this challenge idea. I feel obliged to find time to write words every day. Really, there is no reason why I can't find half an hour a day or so. I keep making excuses as to not having the time, but they are just excuses.

Thanks for support, everyone.

JDCrayne, I'm writing a mystery, too, sort of 'on the hoof'. I'm pretty sure 'whodunnit', and why, but at this point I'm not sure of the logistics, or how to insert the clues so it doesn't come out as being completely implausible at the end. Still, it's a first draft. I'm sure that by the end of it the plot will have revealed itself and I will know what I need to do to fix the problems.

Shara

I'm sure you'll work it out! My first drafts are always a little rough (to say the least). I once had a couple of suspects leaving the area two days before they arrived in the next chapter. When I think I'm done with the final draft, I have my husband skim through it. He's not a mystery buff, but he's great at spotting holes in the plot.

I've written mysteries both with an intensive outline and just on the hoof. Both can work. I kind of like on the hoof. I start out with a basic idea and just work around it. You can do it Shara! And a great beta is worth his/her weight in chocolate!

:hooray: for all the new words.

I didn't write on my WIP or synop. I know. Bad kitty. Get the poking stick.

But! But! I did write 1,200 so far on that short story I've been working on. I'm just obsessed with it and I simply have to finish it! It's one of those projects that just tackles you and won't leave you alone.

950 words tonight.

I am trying to establish a routine where at some point between arriving home from work and going to bed I will sit at the computer and write at least 500 words. No more excuses about no more time; I just spend less time messing around with emails or watching TV and write instead.

Seems to be working so far! i am having a very productive week.

My wonderful sainted mother in law took the kids for me today. I ignored every speck of housework and wrote an entire short story, start to finish, with occasional pop-ins to AW. 3316 words. I can barely believe it. And I can't wait to re-read and begin the edits tomorrow.

Shara, that's awesome! :Sun: And you've got the right idea with establishing a routine. That's what I need to do too, a fixed non-negotiable block of time every single day -- not depend on fluke days like today. I've always known that but I've never taken a good hard enough look at my schedule to do it. Thanks for the :e2poke:!

It wasn't so much a scene I didn't like. Ah, who am I kidding! This novel is one that I decided to stretch myself with by using elements I've never done before, therefor, making most of it harder for me. But I do like it and the characters. Just seems to go slower, which is maybe not such a bad thing.

Thanks for the explanation Mel. :) And I agree, going slower and stretching yourself aren't bad things at all. I should do them more myself. ;)

Annie, I haven't done cross stitch in ages! I hope both projects go well! :Sun:

Dian, you go! :Sun: And crank that a/c. Mine's been on for a while now. ;)

As for me - I re-read the short I did yesterday (I can see how rushed I was, how excited to get to the end  ) and got 665 new words between two other shorts. WIP -- stagnant. I'm not sure where to put my focus, shorts or the new novel. My heart is tugging me toward shorts at the moment, which is bittersweet.

I've no idea how people get a total count! Possibly an estimate from how much area they've covered? That wouldn't work too well for me since I do a color at a time, so I'll go over the same area multiple times.

This is the one I'm working on:

I am about to go on holiday for a week, and won't have email access so I was going to let you all know I won't be posting here till I come back.

I probably won't be writing, either (actually I will be sitting in the sun!!). But I need to think about my plot, and work out what direction it needs to be taking. So I shall ponder, and think, and maybe scribble notes, and hopefully by the time I come back I shall be ready to roll again.

But me, I'm lame, and full of shame. *sheepish* I've had no words the last few days, and I've even avoided coming to AW for that long in the hopes that I'd 'make it up' and not have to own up in this thread. Only 198 words today. Spent most of the day reading Flavius Josephus, volume one, only to realize the part I actually need to read is (apparently) in volume 15 or so.

Still, it was fascinating reading, so was time well spent. Back to the library to find the right volume.

May I join in here? Do I need to bribe someone? I need some serious hand-holding as I try (for the third time) to write my first novel (literary/mainstream/contemporary).

I started in mid-July writing 500 words a day, then I upped it to 600 when it felt relatively easy. Now I'm shooting for 700.

My first draft sucks so much that the filename is "Dyson."

Any rules for the 500-words-a-day thread I should know about? Thanks!

Oh, and I wrote 242 words during my lunch break. I hope to hit my 700 word goal this evening.

I'm back! After soaking up the sun in Israel for a while.

Now back in rainy old Britain (well no rain today but I think it's a brief reprieve).

I have been deliberating whether to go back and revise Draft 1, to try and fix the problems, or carry on going and acknowledge the fact there are holes in the plot (not to mention complete cardboard cut-outs for characters and just fix everything in Draft 2.

I have decided to keep going. I want to finish Draft 1 by the end of the year. Who cares if it's rubbish? No one's going to read it but me.

I tend to do a chapter-by-chapter summary as I go along, and what I have decided to do is make copious notes on this on what I need to fix for Draft 2. And I'm going to do a write-up on each of my characters, in an attempt to get to know them better and hence make them more 3-dimension.

So, back at the computer now but no words tonight, as I have been making notes on what to fix for Draft 2.

Well done to everyone else, though. You're all doing great!

I didn't check it out because I thought it was for Mystery, Thriller and Suspense writers. Finally peeked in this month and saw that genre didn't matter.

:Sun: to everyone! Wow, so much productivity going on here. I love it!

ETA: 850 words today on my WIP. I didn't think I'd ever get this far. Seriously. I'm going into uncharted territory here because I normally toss my WIP when I hit the 10K mark.

Somebody poke me if I don't check in tomorrow -- I'm feeling depressded (funerals will do that) & I need to use this weekend to actually be productive. :(

Nothing for the last two days.

But 1600 words this morning to make up for it.

Going to bed now, but I managed to write 1400 words and edited 350 so now my WIP has a total of 2159 words.

I am finally into the swing of it. Feels good. :)

Night everyone and morning to those where the sun is up and shining. :D

How are you doing, Annie? I'm thinking of you too. :Hug2:

Editing is going great. A whole bunch of new words with that editing, a few hundred at least. I hope it'll all still make sense later!

My body finally went on strike and slept for two days. I will be making the time up tomorrow. I have no choice. For now, I am going back to bed.

Good job everyone.

I'm here! (I did peek in a couple of times today and saw the hugs...thank you! Where's a warm-fuzzy smilie when I need one?)

Mixed results with the day. I got some stitching done and I got notes taken and a couple of scenes plotted for a short story. (I'm trying to do this one as an exercise in planning...I have beginning & end, but not middle.) Also went to the movies with my brother, which was fun if not productive, and did a couple of errands. And some stretches of poking around the internet doing nothing, but they didn't take over the entire day at least. :)

:Sun: to Cassie, moth, Mel, burgy, Shara, AnnieColleen and Soccer Mom. All of you are making great progress! I love seeing everyone busily working on their WIPs.

:Hug2: to dahmnait. Rest is very important, so I hope you got enough of it last night!

Brownies for everyone!

I'll be hitting my 700 word quota in another 20 minutes or so. The writing is getting more difficult because I'm definitely in uncharted waters here. I keep telling myself that this first novel is just to practice getting to "The End" on a piece longer than 11K words.

All the editing and rewriting has caused my brain to overload so I took a couple of days off. I got back at it today and managed to go through about two chapters and added 680 words.

I didn't manage any words in the last two days of July.

But I wanted to sign off by saying I have calculated that I wrote 15,600 words in total in the month of July.

That's an average of 503 words a day, so I guess I did it in the end!

I'm going to go check out the August thread now.

Hi
I'm in for this challenge. I did start yesterday, 1st July, and completed 500 words. It is a standalone but has legs, as they say, so it might turn into a novella or something else. This is day 2, and I'm thinking about it. Procrastination rules.
Good luck to everyone participating.
Oh, dear. Am I in the wrong thread? This dates back 2007.

Yep. Wrong thread. :) don't think Jude started the one for July 2016. Holiday weekend and all.

Pretty sure hj doesn't have to start it, and as I'm here on the holiday weekend, I'll open one up. :)

And welcome, Lynda! :hooray: :hooray:
