Hi,

Do you ever feel like your writing should go in a different direction? Do you sometimes feel that it is time to switch subjects? Have you written a few articles that have made you cry or get emotional over? How did you handle it? Do you ever wonder if your writing makes a positive difference?

My writing has made me cry, but not because it was emotional, because it was so bad.

As for positive difference, to whom do you mean? Currently, very few people read anything of mine  so I'm not making much of a difference to anyone, except maybe myself (does that count?)

I have written a few PBs, short stories and novels. As of yet, I'm not published but it will happen. I'm working on it. I find myself drawn to different stories at different times., I think I switch when I need to.

I don't write articles but I can apply this to what I do write. For example, in my second novel I wrote, I really did get upset with the one thing that happened. It took three days of being really upset and one good cry which confused me before I realized why I was in that funk. I love when the story affects me like that; it means I've got it right. I want to get emotional while writing the first draft; I want more distance while rewriting. At this point, my writing does have a positive impact because it helps keep me together and friends who read enjoy it. I do wonder about the further in the future impact on strangers. I want to be published so I think that curiousity in passing is inevitable. :)

Sometimes I feel like my writing should go a different direction, yes. It's usually when I'm in the middle of a manuscript, and it's usually caused, for me, by the infamous Mid-Book Blues. I've thought about writing short stories and have had an article or two published, but the truth be known, I can't seem to get out of the novel-writing path. That seems to be what I'm best at, so I've pretty much stayed within it.

As far as writing making me cry, I've had novel scenes that made me cry, gag, and have nightmares (usually because of the subject matter, not the bad writing).

Recently, I've begun to handle my emotions about my writing, as well as my feeling I should change it, by telling myself I'm thinking with my emotions instead of with my brain. I have to stop and think whether or not my proposed actions will benefit my writing or my career, or no. The most positive difference I've had in my own writing experience over the last couple years is that I actually have learned to think with my mind instead of with my heart.

:)

Yes...I loved writing novels but could never come up with something decent...I'd start on somehting and just quit--- so i've changed to screenplays instead...to me they're a bit easier to write--not that much but I can SHOW what's happening :) Does that make sense?

I like writing about pregnancy and birth best. And I have. But I don't always get to. If it was up to me that's all I'd write about. Most people hear my background (health & science) and get all health and science greedy but not in a pregnancy / birth way more in a, "Can you write about heart murmurs, diabetes, brain tumor" kind of way. Also business copy like proposals and brochures pay well so I do that to. Often I end up writing about health topics over and over...or copy. I get a bit bored but that's my specialty and it brings in money so what can a girl do.

However, to spice things up and perhaps save me from a writing rut I recently applied for a blogging position way out of my comfort zone -- about houses and buildings. I have experience of a sort regarding this (sustainable building, green topics, I built a house) but I never, ever write about it. I got the job and I'm hoping it revs up my curiosity about the world around me.

Here's hoping.

Take care
~ Jennifer

Yes. I'm revising my WIP because somewhere along the way the tone changed and it's not what I want it to be. At the same time, I'm trying to keep focused on it, despite feeling inclined to write something else. What I've done is to take a brief break from the WIP. I wrote something else, and now I'm going back to the WIP.

I recently wrote an article and cried a bit while doing it. I sent it to some test readers with intimate knowledge of my subject and know that some of them cried at reading it. It was an outlet for me and is intended for a very narrow audience. It hasn't been published yet, but the only positive difference I can hope for is that the intended audience can share it with others who don't understand what they're going through and they'll start to get an idea.

The primary reason I'm a freelance writer is it gives me the flexibility to help care for my niece, Maria, who has an array of neurological problems. Most of what I do now is website content, online articles, and press releases. I get a decent hourly wage from it, but it's not exactly fun or particularly important work. It's also work on short deadlines so sometimes it's hard to coordinate it with my niece's complicated schedule of therapies and doctor appointments.

Maria's ophthalmologist and orthotics specialist both need grant writers and seem interested in using me. That would be great, both from a personal and a professional point of view. I want to move into grant writing and/or writing for nonprofits.

Does my writing make a positive difference? Right now, not really. Helping fund projects that will help kids see and walk? Yeah, I think that would give me the warm fuzzies.

Hi Sean,

You have some excellent points. I believe that we all know what topics we are best at. At times I've started to cry over the subject that I am writing about. I understand how you feel. I think somewhere everywhere that writing touches people in different ways.

Hi Aspiringwriter,

You make sense perfectly. I know what you mean. I always thought it would be pretty neat to write a screenplay. Screenplays are something that has always interested me. Good Luck!

Let us all know when the screenplay turns into a movie! :)

Hi Namatu,

Perhaps I should try working on different project(s) at the same time. I think it is pretty amazing every individual who is dedicated to helping people. You sound like you dedicated to helping people with your writing. I have cried over several of my writings. It was hard for me to put some things into text, but I knew it was something that I had to do in order to help people.

Hi Cyjon,

Sorry to hear that about your neice. I hope she has a full recovery soon. It takes allot for someone to take care of their neice. I am quite amazed that you dedicate your time to taking care of her. You are a pretty amazing individual.

I feel that we are lucky to be freelance writers since it enables us to create our own schedule. You could make quite a bit of money if you write grants for the doctors. It would help your income by a large amount.

Good Luck! Keep up the excellent work! You are a wonderful individual!
