I have been promising myself for ages, but now I've finally done it. I wrote a story around 6 months back and after reviewing it yesterday, I still liked it. So now it's off to its first market. My first submission barring that awful 100-word contest entry I did at the time I wrote that story.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed...

I'm about to hit day 14. This waiting is excruciating and writing something else is not distracting me. HELP!!

Oh, Honey... It only gets worse. You'll most likely be waiting for a long time. The submissions process is a roller coaster - so exciting when you gt requests for partials or full ms, so devastating when you get rejections... Hang on and enjoy the ride!

And yes, write number two. Use that energy for something productive!

Congrats! Those first submissions are always the hardest...I still haven't gotten there. Points to you!

And yes, write number two. Use that energy for something productive! That's just it. It's not a novel. I'm fretting over a short story in a market with a relatively quick RT

I just sent out my first one last month and I've had two rejections on it already. Enjoy the wait... it just might mean good news!

Day 17: I'm wiping sweat of my desk and, against my better judgement, I'm replacing my chewed down nails with long, fake ones (I'll just keep chewing anyway). The average response time for acceptances is due in about 4 days. After that, the chance of a rejection is on the increase. *shudder*

And the waiting continues. All I do is wait. It's takes no small amount of bravery to send out your work, so good for you. All the best and I hope you hear soon.

And for goodness sake, start writing something else!!

I am writing something else, but that isn't making the waiting any easier.

Day 20...

Stijn Hommes
06-29-2007, 12:36 PM
Alas. After 38 days I've got my first shiny rejection.
Funnily enough the rejection didn't get me as worked up as I expected it would.
The story is already out the door again to another publication and as soon as another one opens up to reading, I will send it there too.
*Fingers crossed*

I didn't see this until after I posted previously.

I'm glad you sent it out again immediately. That's the spirit! Good attitude.

congratulations on your first rejection!!! as my hubby tells me all the time--rejection means you're in the game. and kudos on sending it back out there.

I just netted my second rejection :( and already it's getting hard to keep the story in circulation. Too many of the magazines I want to submit to are closing down for the summer.

Keep on it, Stijn. I'm running into the same problem with a lot of journals/magazines being shut down for the summer, but there are plenty still open. Just keep writing and you'll have new and improved pieces to submit come September.

Stijn Hommes

Third rejection was from a few days ago, Today I got my fourth...
One more and I'll have it freed up for a market that doesn't accept simultaneous submissions...

Things are looking up. I've got a "maybe" - they're keeping it filed for a future issue.
That's the closest I ever came to a yes. I won't name the mag, don't want to jinx it, but it sure feels good. :)

Stijn Hommes
12-24-2007, 12:01 AM
And the "maybe" turned into a "yes"!
My story didn't fit the Fall Issue, but the editor did want to have it for the Winter Issue.
Funny thing is that I totally wasn't expecting the acceptance when it came.
Now the deal is done and dusted. I've been paid $10 and the story is up at
http://www.terra-media.us/burst/facing_xmas_facts1.htm

Yes, the letters are small, it's aimed at mobile devices. I'm not keen on mobiles myself, but I couldn't resist a publication with the quality of stories they have.

Hurray! On to the next sale!

the solution to the waiting is to get a second piece finished and out there. And a third. Then when the rejections come, you can say, oh, well, there's still X and Y out there, no big deal.

It's hard to send our literary children out but they do need to see the world, and the world needs to see them.
