I was reading a column on 60 thoughts on turning 60 by Rich Rein, publisher of US 1 Newspaper in Princeton, NJ. Rich was the first and one of the best editors I have written for. He not only told you something didn't work, he explained why and often had ideas on how to fix it.

Some of his thoughts in the column have to do with writing and I thought I would share two of them. The rest are at http://www.princetoninfo.com/200705/70516f01.html The last 15 or so on the list have to do specifically with writing.

From Rein's thoughts column:

Novice writers should try their hand at every type of story. Someone struggling to be the writer of 3,000-word feature articles might turn out to be a great writer of 300-word editorials. John McPhee told me that back in 1972, when I was starting my freelance career. [John McPhee, is a the multi-published non-fiction icon]

Correcting style points in a story adds nothing to the meaning of the story, but the process forces you to read the story more carefully than you would otherwise.
