Allow me a moment of self-pity/complaining time. I work for a "think tank" and I've been assigned to write a chapter for a book based on a 7 year study they did. I usually write research papers. Suffice it to say, this is the most ardous assignment I've had to date, and I have writers block. Thanks for reading. :head

Re: Writer's Block

pop, when your nose is pressed against one, even a small hill can seem like Mt. Everest. Step back a bit, give it a bit of time while your brain does some sifting in the background, and before you know it you'll find your beginning and be off to the races.

William Blake Bradbury

I had a bad case of writer's block for five years.

I was coaxed out of my self-made mental wormhole by my fellow writers over a long period of time and am now more prolific and happy than ever. But, since you don't have the luxury of time, allow me to speed up the process for you: [slamming table with open hand] DO IT! DO IT! DO IT! DO IT! DO IT! Admittedly, there's a lack of subtlety to this approach, but I believe I've neatly and nicely condensed what my particular coven of aspiring literati tried most earnestly to impart to me. Writing is an oxymoron: deep, deep thought beckoned forth when one's mind is very blank. It's all inertia, action, very Zen. Do not think about it. Do no allow yourself to become self-conscious. Do not appraise, do not look over your shoulder at the furrows you've all ready tilled. Just DO IT! DO IT! DO IT! Writing is like "Ocean's 11" or "Entrapment." You have to sneak up into your higher brain functions through the underground sewers of your lower brain stem. It's a covert operation. Most modern people guard their candor and advanced cognizance like bars of gold. They don't dare let them slip away. You must practice Indian stealth. Write, don't think. Writing is thoughtful thoughtlessness, revision is total, undiluted, cerebral thought. Now DO IT! DO IT! DO IT! DO IT!<img border=0 src="http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/pimp.gif" />

Read Jenna Glatzer's book, Outwitting Writer's Block. It will help. Trust me.

Re: writer's block

There's a great chapter in the book: "Immediate Fiction" by Jerry Cleaver that is sure to help cure what ails you—Chapter 15: "Hitting the Wall: Blocking and Unblocking." This chapter is about 40 pages long—much too much advice to summarize here.

Good luck!
