This probably won't be as popular as the top 5 singers, but ...
  1. Tommy Emmanuel (there is no close 2nd)
  2. Steve Vai
  3. John Petrucci (Dream Theater)
  4. Eddie Van Halen (partially for his influence)
  5. Stevie Ray Vaughn
Okay, there are some really great guitar players who didn't make my "five". Fire away...

Yngwie Malmsteen(arpeggios from hell, hillariously I thought was instructional video, punked myself)
    Steve Vai(hell yeah)
Eddie Van Halen(admit it, partially for his hair too;))

Just as in writing, flash and excess doesn't necessarily make a guitarist great.

1. Tommy Bolin
2. Jimi Hendrix
3. Jeff Beck
4. Stevie Ray
5. Ritchie Blackmore

Sorry III. I didn't bother to check the video, because I know his stuff. That was hilarious.

"I taught God how to play guitar."

Priceless.

It's mystifying to me that you guitar-afficionados don't have Chet Akins anywhere on your lists.

I don't think you can place the "greats" in any kind of definitive order, as there will always be heated debate. There are too many factors that make one great: from song-writing, to style, to arrangement, etc.

So, here are some "greatest," in no particular order:

Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton, Kirk Hammett, Chet Akins.

Most underrated guitarists: Prince and John Mayer.

The right earlobe of North America
1. Jimi Hendrix
2. Jimi Hendrix
3. Jimi Hendrix
4. Jimi Hendrix
5. Jimi Hendrix

Now, for the next five good ones. I'll nominate:

6. Marc Knopfler
7. Duane Allman
8. Clapton
9. Don Felder
10. Stevie Ray Vaughan

Oh, and, just incidentally, fast on the guitar isn't all that matters.

Ooh, Don Felder.

I'd forgotten about him. That guy can play nearly every kind of guitar there is.

Eagles are a lesser group now without him.

There's just gotta be 5 awesome female rock guitarists. I'll give it a go.

  • Nancy Wilson
    Lita Ford
    Bonnie Raitt
    Vicki Peterson
    Poison Ivy

Crap! I confused threads. So where do I put Memphis Minnie? Double crap! Wouldn't be fair to push out any of the other ladies, when the men are being represented in full force.

I'm seeing alot of "fast <> good" comments which I absolutely agree with, but don't pidgeonhole some of these guitarists as merely "fast". Guys like Vai and Petrucci and Satch are the whole package. They can play with incredible emotion, range of styles, and blazing speed on incredibly technical passages. I'd daresay "playing 12 bar blues scales <> good".

To Dr. Spork, yeah, Chet Atkins was a gift from God.

I said "pidgeon hole" (tee hee)

I've never understood why there are so few good female guitarists and so many good male guitarists. Women are great at classical instruments, so why are rock instruments so lopsidedly male dominated? Thank God nobody's passed quota legislation for guitar ... yet.
