Webzine editing

Has anyone ever had a webzine edit their work after they've given permission to use?

Here's what happened to me. It was my first experience with webzines, so this may be normal and I just don't know it. I submitted a story and got an acceptance email. The submission guidelines on the website were very clear that there were three types of responses you could get: acceptance, acceptance pending edits, and rejection. Since I got a straight acceptance I assumed all was well. The story is out and I read through it and found that some deletions had been made. Nothing terribly extensive in quantity, really just a few paragraphs and one scene, but what was in those paragraphs and one scene was characterization and plot. Nothing was really edited - none of the language that was there had been changed, just paragraphs deleted.

Sound normal? Not normal? Anybody else have something similar happen? I would think if they wanted more porn and less plot, they would have asked me for edits. But maybe I'm wrong?

I would say not normal. Unless they specifically reserve the right to edit as they wish I would expect to see only correction of errors and changes of a few words here and there. I see no reason to treat web and pulp magazines differently in this aspect.

I see no reason to treat web and pulp magazines differently in this aspect.

Don't know much about web publishing, but here are my thots, based on my experience with pulps many years ago.

Pulp magazines have space and advertising considerations. They sometimes have to do last minute cutting in order to get an ad in. Ads pay the rent. That includes the pay for your story. Getting a paragraph or two, or a scene or two, cut is just part of the job.

I don't see space as being a consideration for an ezine, webzine, etc.
