How did you get started?

Trying to start some discussions here...no one seems to be talking much!
I'm curious, how did you get started writing erotica? Have you had any success with it?

I'll talk about erotica!

As I mentioned in another thread I delve into the world of slash, which is basically same sex erotica for fanfiction. Some of it's good, some of it's totally hot and some may as well not bother - kind of like 'real' writing, yes?

How did I get started in this? Totally by accident! I thought slash meant.. well... slash, with a knife, you know - a bit of action, some fights. Boy, did I get a shock! A real eye-opener [they can do what with what???!!!]

Since then, of course, I've travelled down the erotic road and will read anything that is written well - gay or heterosexual - though I prefer something with a good storyline and strong plot as well.

I don't go in for Mills & Boon type romance fluffy stuff at all. Like my general fiction, I prefer a good strong story with plenty of meat in it.

Meat, get it...

Okay, so I have a sick sense of humour too.

If anyone wants anything critiqued, I'd be happy to help out. Can erotica stories be posted here?

Glad to see people posting!

I got started writing Erotica mainly for fun at first. Most of those first stories were "teaser" stories or naughty "letters". I found as I kept writing, that writing Erotica could be so much more. I switched my writing to incorporate the bdsm lifestyle...writing more short stories and articles. Now, it emcompasses most of what I do.

I often contemplate writing something more "mainstream" again, but find Erotica too much fun, not to mention all the various genres one can diversify in. I have also decided to try a novel (though mainstream Erotica, not bdsm) and see how that goes.

And to comment here on the other thread about contests (yes, am being lazy and trying to save time *smiles*), I hear of writing contests for Erotica writers all the time. I will try and look for details again if interested. Also, my Ezine will be featuring a writing contest soon - I hope! - keep fingers crossed that all goes well. If it does, I hope the future holds me being able to pay a small fee for submissions soon.

And once again, nice to see this forum finally going...will be back often now!

I am resurrecting this old thread for possible new input.

I was interested to note another who started from slash fanfiction. This was also the case for me -- the first piece of erotica I wrote was a bizarre Sherlock Holmes/Dracula story.

Who else has a 'first' to share?

ahhh, fanfic....

I got my start in fanfic. I wrote this massive epic that was nothing but an excuse for unabashed, unashamed, unrepentent smut. It wasn't even erotica. It was just porn and happy to be that way.

It also got a lot of great reviews and positive reaction. I realized I can write a pretty decent sex scene, and i enjoyed writing it a lot. My style has changed, and I write very little actual pornography now, but I do still write a great deal of erotica, both "original" and fanfic.

Re: ahhh, fanfic....

Glad to hear I'm not the only one who started with fanfic! My first was total smut. Basically, I was trying to make two of my literary characters have sex and I couldn't get over myself enough to write the scene. So I read some erotic short stories and then wrote down a fantasy of mine in a similar style, but much more porno, thinking that if I went right to the edge I could come back to more literary sex easily. It worked, I'm happy to say. And I got great feedback on the fanfic, so I explored erotica more and I enjoy writing it. It's a pretty decent market too, not nearly the minefield that literary fiction can be.

Re: ahhh, fanfic....

I started writing erotica after watching Henry and June for the the first time, then delving into all the erotica that Anais Nin did, so most of my stuff is literary erotica, inspired by her writing. Lately, I've been branching out into fetish and horror, though. It's a bit more fun.

Writing Again

I've never actually written erotica. When I was a kid I sat in the back of the class and drew nude pictures. Sold the results for a dime each.

Wrote some porn novels, everything was illegal then and almost anything would sell. They took 3 or 4 days to write, you grabbed your $200 and ran. They were neither as creative nor as graphic as porn is now.

Wrote a couple of romances. A kiss was a big thing. Her blouse never got unbuttoned until after the novel which is presumably they got married and lived happily ever after.

My current interest in erotica is I feel that left to its own devices it will go more and more mainstream. By that I mean novels will be expected to have at least one fairly graphic sex scene in them no matter what their primary genre or subject.

The only inhibition I see to this is what I call the Bin Laden Placaters. Those apologists who believe that instead of fighting for our freedoms we should eradicate our society of anything Bin Laden does not approve of, beginning with Howard Stern.

good combination of porn and politics. lol

I've been a erotic reader for years, and last year came across a genre romantica (copyrighted) that combined my two favorite subjects romance and erotica, and the thing that started me to writing is my own cocky pride. I felt that i could do that better than some of the author's books i'd read, of course now that i had my story rejected maybe i was wrong. lol
