My niece is going to be 14 on Friday. Any idea what 14 year old girls like...apart from 17 year old boys?

Make up! Clothes! Music!

Gift cards for any of those things will be a huge hit. And maybe send her some flowers too. My baby sister always loved it when I sent her flowers(she's 11 years younger). She said it made her feel grown up.

I have two of those... I second the gift cards idea and the flowers too, especially if you can send them to her school so she gets to show them off. Other than that it gets difficult as this is the age where interests really diverge. No idea what she's into?

Wearing her skirts too short and using as few words as possible in any reply she may deign to give :D
Oh, and making me feel very old as I still think she's three.

teenagers are good at that (all of the above). In that case toss her some money in a card and keep going ;)

Oh boy, do I hear you! When my sister came over to visit last year, she was 21, but in my mind she was still 14 and just a kid. I almost fainted every time she picked up my huge chef's knife.

Where's my walker? :D

Hmmmm, well let's see, when I was 14 (How Many Years ago!?) the girls were into... well, ... yeah...

Yup, get her a half-bottle of cheap vodka and a value-pack of condoms.

If there's nothing specific that she wants, play it safe and go with vouchers or cashy money.

Oh come on, you're making us fourteen-year olds look bad. Get her a book.

What 14-year-old girl doesn't want Barbie and My Little Pony accessories to show off to their pals?

Failing that, a Harley.

I asked my fourteen year old what you should get your fourteen year old.

Her answer: "Store gift cards are cool, that way you don't pick out something she has to return. Music is good. If she has an iPod, get her an iTunes card. Movie theater gift cards are good too."

The other option would be to ask her, "What do you want?" But she'll probably just say "money" and then you're back where you started.

Target gift cards. (fashion)
Hot Topic gift cards(better fashion)
Bookstore gift cards (Latest YA vampire romance- Latest Anime graphic novels)
Starbucks gift cards (where teenagers like to hang out and pretend they're all grown)

Well, Mayhaps times have changed for the better.

Possibly although I'm pretty sure there would be a big queue of people ready to kick the shit out of any spotty little oik who comes near my niece with a rubber.

Better that than a spotty oik not...
No, that way danger lies.

I would stick to gift tokens for her favourite stores. It may seem impersonal, but I know that when I try and 'do' personal presents (clothes/music/films), I always muff it.

Can't go wrong with gift cards. Get her a gift card to an entire mall though, not any particular store (I know this can be done with Simon owned malls but others should have something similar). This way not only do you leave her free to pick her product, you leave her free to pick her store, too.

I thought of ponies too. They might be interested in slashdot.org, at least for this day a year ago:

Oh, and (link from above webpage) anything with this logo. The story describes the whole phenomenon:

Some good suggestions here. I had a similar issue with my nephew a couple of years ago when he turned 15.

I wanted to buy him a four pack of cheap lager and a copy of Razzle but my sister wouldn't let me. :D

Good CDs. The Killers, Fall Out Boy, The Fray, Blue October, Hinder, Snow Patrol are pretty good. Dashboard Confessional, too.

Or you could gift card. . .

Go with a gift card, and do send her flowers. Good luck!

As the others have said I'd go money or vouchers. Unless you know her and her tastes extremely well.

This is about the age that my daughter started holding up grandma's underwear presents with a hint of disappointment... grandma was still thinking "cute but practical" cotton undies, my daughter was now thinking "sexy g-strings".

Money or vouchers.
