Converting a Word Doc to PDF

Kathystoob

Make sure you are using the latest version of Acrobat PROFESSIONAL so that you have Acrobat Reader AND Acrobat WRITER. Without writer, the conversion won't work.

Good Luck!!

You can also download a free PDF generator, e.g. PrimoPDF from http://www.primopdf.com which I'd recommend.

When you download and run the install program, a new printer driver will be added to your list of printers. You can then select File / Print in MS Word or any other application, select PrimoPDF from the list of available printers, enter a filename when prompted, and a PDF file will be created.

It's easy.

Just install a PDF printer. There are dozens of 100% free good ones out there.

I use Free PDF XP.

If you have Windows 2000 or XP, just go to:

* http://babelfish.altavista.com/babelfish/urltrurl?lp=de_en&trurl=http://shbox.de/fpx732.htm

And install the first two things on the list.

There's no need to pay for Acrobat Writer unless you want to.

Just open the .rtf file in MSWord (or your favourite editor), select Print and print to the 'PDF Converter'.

Done.

Alternatively, OpenOffice Write has an export to pdf function with lots of options. And that's free too.

Here is the PDF program I use - it is free from

http://sourceforge.net

Search for pdfcreator - over 10,000,000 people have downloaded it.

make sure you get the free version - there are people out there who will charge you for the same program.

When you install it on your computer, it looks like another printer in Windows. From any program, select the PDFCreator printer and it takes care of the rest.

Download OpenOffice. http://www.openoffice.org/ It's one of the best office suits out there, it's free, and in will convert anything to very good PDF with one mouse click. And, if disk space is a problem, you can install just the word processor.

And if you work on an Apple computer just choose print and then save as PDF.

No need for the massive expense of acrobat pro, there are lots of utilities for exporing word files as PDF. (Open office is great for that, too, but has trouble importing highly formatted documents like scripts, I find.)

I use cutepdf, but have also used primopdf and a few others. They are free downloads. Once installed (and they often require that you also download and install ghostscript or some converter...not a big deal) the emulate a printer on your Word toolbar. Just hit print, select the program as the printer and go.
A script is a very simple thing for this type of rendering program. What's get complicated are graphics (not a big problem, although some won't handle windows backgrounds) or hyperlinks. A top of the line program (like acrobat) will reproduce the link just like in windows...clickable, same color, etc.
Some won't make it clickable at all. Some will render it as a live link if you've typed the URL as such : mybigfatscripts.com/thelma&louise2.pdf but if the link works off a tag such as THELMA AND LOUISE II then it won't click.

Which type of Office are you using? You should be able to simply use a plug-in for Office 2003 or 2007 to get the job done... I don't remember what it's called in 2003, but in 2007 there's "Save as PDF" functionality that you simply need to download from Microsoft. It's free, all that it requires is a valid copy of Office 2007 (since it has to pass Office Genuine Advantage.) That way there's no additional software needed other than what you've already listed yourself as having (assuming that your Word doc is made with Microsoft Word.)

Most people are not using Office 2007, for heaven's sake! :)

As Derek recommended above, download primoPDF. It is free and does not add any distracting watermarks or make you look at ads. You just choose it as your "printer" when you get ready to create a PDF.

You can get a free plugin for any version of Word, not just 2007. But from my experience, even OpenOffice does a better job than primoPDF, and it's free, too.

No need to use a sledgehammer to crack a walnut.

Original poster has presumably solved the problem by now.

Actually I haven't. :( I've tried downloading those programs and they don't work for me. Must be my processing speed. But I'm planning to try it at a friend's house where a faster connection exists.
