I know the cost of making the hardcover is higher, but I'm wondering if anyone has noticed their sales or acceptance in a brick & morter (e.g. Barnes & Noble) is any different between the two?
Just seeme to me that the hardcover may sell better than the paperback.

I'd be astonished, nay gob-smacked, if it made any difference.

Why are they reluctant to stock the paperback? The reasons probably include:

- short discount
- non-returnability
- lack of marketing
- maybe even the fact it's POD/published by a particular vanity POD.

Being a paperback instead of a hardcover won't even be on the list.

I agree that format is not part of the issue. If anything the higher cover price of hardcover would just add to the problem. A story of mine was recently in a small press POD anthology offered in both formats and the paperback was much more likely to get stocked.

I almost never buy hardback if paperback is available. It's too expensive, too heavy to carry about and has the same info as the paperback...
