We got 2 new(er) computers over the course of the last two years. They were both working smoothly until about a month ago. Ever since then, they've been screwing up all the time, and every virus detector and technician we consult claims there's nothing wrong with them and that still have plenty of free space on them.

Now, everyone I know who has a computer says their's is screwing up as well.

Is anyone else's computer acting up? Or is it an odd regional government conspiracy?

No, it's everywhere.

But it's no government conspiracy.

Microsoft Vista came out a month ago, remember?

First--Don't buy a computer with Windows Vista

Two--spend sixty bucks and buy McAfee virus scan... that will do the trick.

Three--if it's broke, deal with it.

Doesn't mean it doesn't have an STD. Denial is not a healthy thing, really. You should really have it tested. And a pregnancy test too...God knows you don't want to come in one day and find a little MP3 player you didn't know about...

LMAO WTF???

Dude, I used to EDIT pornos. I'd look at pornos for HOURS everyday because it was my JOB. Why would it hurt my ego to "admit" I look at porn?

Or are you saying it would damage the way other people look at me? And make me less popular? And make people judge me? *quivers in mock terror* The horrors...THE HORRORS!!!

Yes, because nakedness is a sin, and you'll contract viruses just by being sinfully nekkid.

You're probably a veritable cesspool of viruses by now... :D

Truthful tips here

I have had no virus in over a year and half :D

Before that, i had over 100 dead hardrives. (Of course they, all have been modified now, to suit the one that's been working wonders)

Also, I don't go on websites that I don't need to go on.

P.S-Some Porn websites, are pretty good and don't attract any worms

On a serious note, if your computer is doing weird things, either it's on the verge of a breakdown, in which case you're a moron who deserves her fate if you don't back up everything important now, or you've picked up spyware, adware, malware, evilware, snerkware, snotware, and every other cutesy-named badware there is. Adult sites are indeed frequently the culprits, but not always, of course.

There's a solution available that's worked for all the computers we ever set up and operate online--that' 15 at last count, because god forbid we get rid of anything, no-o-o-o, we have to keep everything that ever enters this house, even if it breaks or becomes obsolete, because what if we need it?

Oh, sorry, got sidetracked there. Visit Nick and dance the security tango (http://securitytango.com/tango.php), following the steps exactly. It really works.

Maybe if he hadn't made men so damn hairy...then nakedness wouldn't be so...um...deserving of cover.Yeahh...... I can't do super hairy guys. Well, okay, technically I could, but I wouldn't be very happy about it. A moderate amount of hair is okay. And, it gives me something to pull out when they're being a dickhead.

Enough hair that you can tell they've passed puberty is sufficient. I prefer to do a guy ON a bearskin rug, not one that IS a bearskin rug.

Dunno know about hairy guys, but I just had to take my laptop to the shop - some Windows XP update had gotten corrupted, was trying to run but couldn't and was eating up all the memory in the process until my computer froze.

Awhile back, my (fairly new) computer (with a paid copy of Norton's) was running too...ooo...oooo sloooow. A friend brought a couple of good programs over (ClamWin was one...) and found 10 virussss (that's a deadly hissing virus) on this darling. I promptly nuked Norton (though I'd paid extra for it when I bought this laptop) and purchased AVG 7.5 Pro-- It won't let ANY virusssss in-- Hell-- Hardly lets *ME* in!

(I also run Spy Bot **every day** and delete my temporary files)

Then I upped the Memory (though it didn't really need it). Now, I'd say it's running really well... but one of my bottom fans has quit (it's under warranty-- it's going on a vacation). Damn, it's tough typing while constantly blowing on the keyboard.

Bottom line-- Spy Bot-- and nothing less than AVG! And stay FAR-FAR away from Vista!

Buy a Mac.

(I actually don't care if you do (that sounds so harsh - I care, I really do, just not about that) I know it just annoys PC users).

The added bonus is that if you buy the other kind of Mac, it covers the hairy-man-ass.

Mac, great for EVERYTHING! :D

I agree, that probably does work (run three different up-to-date scanners), but I've never spent as much time as running all those things takes, at least not on my own computers. I've used Spybot an a couple of other things on others' computers, it's always interesting to see the things it scans for - "XXX Dialer" and stuff. But it can take an hour or so for each scanning program to run (as if rebooting doesn't take enough time), so you've got to leave it running for an hour or howeverlong it takes, update the next one and get it running, wait another hour,...

Is there not a general malware (adware/spyware/virus) scanner on the market? It seems that if there were ONE program that did everything and was kept updated, the maker would corner the market on these things.

I've posted all the nerdy things I know to do over on one of the "help I think I've got a virus" threads in Tech Help. Oh, this is Office Party, was I not supposed to give a serious, technical response?

I did notice this at the bottom of that site:

Some of this stuff can be potentially damaging to your system - if you're not sure what you're doing, please bring your system to a qualified professional to clean it!It seems most people do NOT know what they're doing (not to take anything away from "normal users" - these things are so incredibly complicated - back in the Apple ][ days one person [Steve Wozniak and whoever else wanted to learn] could know everything there was to know about a microcomputer, but it's way too much now), but taking it to a "qualified professional" may not be the right thing to do - they may just reinstall Windows, maybe do a virus scan, or they may just reformat the drive then reinstall Windows.

I recall the service/returns window at one of the big computer chain stores had a sign that says (not an exact quote, but close enough, and surely all the chains say this) "Not responsible for data loss. If you want to save your data, we strongly recommend you do a backup before you bring your system in." Of course if it's got a virus and/or won't boot, you might have a problem making a backup.

You know, I'm strictly "PC," as the saying goes, but with everything I'm hearing about Vista, this may be my last one. I have yet to hear anybody say anything good about it.
