You know, with all the flouncing, pouting, foot stomping and tantrum throwing we see here at AW, I thought I'd do something helpful for a change and offer those of you who are about to quit AW a hand. Rather than having to come up with your own Brave Exit Speech, feel free to choose one of these handy-dandy pre-made templates to suit your purpose. Simply Cut'n'Paste the one that's right for you!

1. You're All Mean!
I can't believe you guys are such poo heads! Quit picking on me! That's it, I'm never coming back! I hate you!

2. I'm Far Too Good To Post Here
Yeah, that's right, you heard me. I'm a way better writer than any of you will EVER be, so I'm not wasting any more time here. Losers.

3. Negativity Makes Baby Kittens Cry
I can't be around you people any more. Every time I log on, which is about forty-seven times each day, I see people spreading hurtful and unkind things. Why can't we all just hold hands and sing Kumbaya? We're supposed to support other writers, not be negative. I'm so depressed, I'm leaving now.

4. No One Likes My Writing, So I'm Outta Here
I posted a 47,000 word extract on SYW in a 8-point font, and not a single damn one of you has had anything to say, except for one guy who said he'd read it later and never did even though that was yesterday and he shoulda had time to look at it by now, and since you all SAY to share your work but then you never read what people post so I think you're all a bunch of poser a$$hole wannabes! Nyah!!

5. The Lurkers Love Me In Email
Look, I posted my opinions in that one thread in TIO, and you're all being so freakin' CRITICAL, but I've gotten a bunch of emails from people who tell me I'm the one who's right. Can I help it if this is like high school and there's a bunch of cliques where the popular people stick up for each other? Huh? Huh?

6. Logical Fallacies
You're all a bunch of Nazis.

7. It's Haskins' Fault
william haskins is mean to me and the moderators let him say bad things and he doesn't even use capital letters and how come no one ever bans the mean people?!?!?!?!?

8. Expletives and Spelling Errors Abound
[deleted]

This public service announcement has been brought to you by the good folks at Patti's House of Grand Indifference.

Please feel free to add your own Brave Exit Speech template, as a way of saying "I care!"

10. My Doctor Says AW is Bad For Me.

Due to the extremely high stress of reading the selfish and hurtful posts on this forum, I have developed NEPS (Nervous Ear Pulling Syndrome). Although rarely fatal (one guy lost his balance free-climbing), it can be painful and debilitating, and the healing process is always interrupted by more ear pulling. I really want to stay and defend those who are being picked on, but I just can't take it anymore.

13. This is just like what happened to me on Wikipedia, where everyone ganged up on me and banned me. And those other sites. They banned me too. It's obviously the same group of people who follow me from website to website that are out to get me. It's not like there's another common factor.Too be fair, I've seen that more often in blogs, with AW listed as one of the 'other sites' that banned the serial non-offender.

There are not enough threads on zombies. I thought this was a board for writers and as much as you folks try ...(and I've been here for awhile, and I notice, among other things, that you do, indeed, try) unsucessfully to have other meaningful discussions, that none of these discuss the impact that zombies have had, and indeed continue to have on modern day literature and that of the past.

Every time a thread is started about zombies and other un-dead, it routinely gets shuffled to page three or farther back, with the only respect seeming to ever be given, is to blood sucking vampires.

I've really had totally enough of this "My MC is not decaying and dropping gobbets of flesh, so my WIP is better than yours" and I am also being tired of crits that say I've put in too much gratuitous violins, with no plot to subsidize it.

Technically Frankenstein was a zombie and nobody seems to have trouble with that except you folks because there is not a thread on that, and if I let you have your way, there will never be.

Desert Rose Agency will publish my book for under $5,000. You losers will never get a deal like that, so poo on you and your speciest, racist and childish hatred of zombie literature.

I don't have to post her, so I'm not going to and you all will be crying and begging me to come back because I'm not only better, but I can know what I'm doing.
And you all don't.

Once upon a time in idyllic land far away there was a wonderful village. Peace and happiness ruled. Everyone was free to voice their opinion without fear of retribution.

One day, someone elected themselves mayor. The mayor hired a sheriff, who hired a posse. They soon beat up on their former friends.

A lone voice cried out in the town square one day: "I've had enough!"

And the mayor and sheriff had her banished from the village, but not before the posse beat the crap out of her, just to show what happens to people who don't agree with them.

The End.

(On a board that I mod someone posted a tale like this in the fiction area. When a fellow user stated the opinion that the tale was a tad mean, the user screamed at everyone because it was a parable and not meant to offend anyone. Then the person sent me a PM asking for their account to be deleted. Flounce.)

I think, if I ever decide I hate AW, I'm going to be original.

Instead of flouncing, I'm going to Spam the Office Party board with PM's that scarletpeaches has sent me, links that promise hysterically funny websites but are actually broken, and pictures of me having sex with Joaquin Phoenix. The mods will have no choice but to ban me, AND I WILL WIN.

There's a slight variation of this:

Look how many views this thread has. Everyone's coming here to read me. You all say you hate me, but you need me to drive traffic to your pathetic site. The mods know this; that's why they don't dare ban me. I'm the most popular person on this board.

I first read that as, "Your all jealous so I'm quilting this place." Which I find rather interesting.

The only place I ever got banned from was a guineafowl discussion forum, where I dared to suggest, on more than one occasion, that one should sanitise eggs prior to setting them for incubation. The response I got was something along the lines of,

"OMG, do you know just what you're saying?"

And yes, I did, which was why I said it.

Well! Just don't annoy me first, lady! Yeah! Or you'll see a flounce the likes of which will make your eyes bleed!

(Say... have we included pre-flounces and post-flounces in our FAQ? How 'bout pseudo-flounces?)

:D

My 6 year old tried to do a dramatic flounce out of the room and when she turned to storm off, she walked right into the doorframe (I almost chewed a hole in my cheek to keep from laughing - only her pride was hurt)... is there any such thing as a not-quite-pulled-off-flounce?

"I'm leavi--" *slams into monitor*

"Ouch."

I call those the 'Shoot yourself in the foot' type flounce... they include those where the OP has to come back in several minutes and edit (leaving proof s/he's been back by the 'edited' line below the post!) because s/he thought of something suitably witty to add. :)

I don't know, but I have seen people abort their flounces like NASA does with the space shuttle launches every so often.

In fact, I believe I did that myself, with my previous flounce.

You're all Nazis! And mean! Why don't you bother to crit MY work? If you gave my work a crit, I'd be willing to crit yours! why dont more writers used of proper grammar, spleling, and capitals?! Re-flunce: trying to sneak back in and pretend you never flounced in the first place. This is of course different from the "I had a bad day, can I come home now."

The re-flunce is "Since I've gotten so many desperate PMs for the lurkers I decided to give you loosers another chance, but I'm warning you, this is your last chance not to piss me off and loose the joy of my presence."

What about a literary flounce, that does not necessarily have to do with the evils of AW, but rather with the idiocy of the publishing industry?

Here's mine.

Some days I feel like Bilbo Baggins.

No, I havent confronted a dragon, or rescued dwarfs from spiders or forest elves. Ive never been visited by wizards, nor do I know any. Ive had some adventures in my 55 years (latch-key teen; Saudi Arabia; Kuwait; China tour, etc.), but my life has not been a fantasy. Home was the eastern megalopolis, then the Midwest, then the South, with two overseas interruptions, not Bagends in the Shire.

But I relate to the famous hobbit in this: At the end of his journeys, he felt out of place in the Shire, and after years of the mundane passed and the pressures for something else built up, he left. Suddenly, publicly, and permanently.

I once felt that, of all the characters in the fiction Id read, I most related to Alexander McKeag (James Michener, Centennial), who spent years alone on the prairie without being lonelyuntil it all built up and he had to scream out in anguish to his empty lands. I even wrote McKeags sonnet:

On Solitude

Oh for a single hour of solitude,
a time alone to read, or think, or pray.
I trust, my love, that youll not think me rude
to let that time stretch out to half a day.
Or better yet, a several day retreat.
What works I could produce in such a span.
Or maybe, dare I wish, a solid week
to contemplate the mysteries of man.
And if a week is good, much better two,
or say a month to fully maximize
creative talents. Later Ill renew
all cold relationships. Yes, this seems wise.

God cuts me short. Im really not impressed.
Go interact with others to be blessed.

But I think the distinguished Mr. Baggins has replaced McKeag. Its been a six year journey, trying to be a writer. Thats not a long time to try to break into the business, I know, but it appears to be all the time I have. I dont feel called to write magazine articles as a platform-building route, cant go to conferences, dont have any friends in positions to give me an entry to publishing, and dont want to self-publish. Every door has slowly closed. Ive administered two Internet poetry critique sites. Both have failed to achieve longevity. Ive spent three years in a real life critique group, finally to realize I was contributing little to them and they little to me. Ive joined on-line writers groups (critique and fellowship, both poetry and prose) and quit when the time necessary for sufficient participation to develop relationships never materialized. I was program chairman of a real life regional poetry group until life swallowed up even that small amount of creative time each month. Slowly but surely, the Shire has beckoned me to return, and the adventure of writing seems as far away as the Mountains of Mirkwood.

To go back to not writing does not seem an option. Yet, continuing to write with no avenue to publishing seems stupid. For what purpose? For my kids to have to deal with boxes of manuscript drafts and revisions when Im gone? To have more heavy things to move when we next change houses (as it seems we must not less frequently than at eight year intervals)? To have something to look at in the future that reminds me of failure and leads to depression?

I have a choice: a stressful, chaotic, over-packed life of adventure (i.e. writing), or a pleasant, quiet, peaceful life in the Shire. I guess I choose the latter, for above all else I need peace. Ive been There; it is time to go Back Again.

So, like Bilbo, I take my magic ring, slip it on my finger, and disappearin this case not to lands afar, but back to the Shire, whether for a few brief months or until my one hundred-eleventieth birthday, who knows. Goodbye.

Bravo! Bravo! ::applause::

While it doesn't mention the aforementioned Haskins-related point or allude to any lurkers, it makes up for those shortcomings with style, grace and quality. I'm prone to overlooking the lack of misspellings, as well. Perhaps it calls to the LOTR lover in me and I'm being overly influenced, but I have to give it at least a 9.

Good job!

Words every good flounce should have:

Clique (preferably spelled cliche)
Schoolgirls
Pedantic

There should also be at least one reference to PM's, preferably from lurkers, and/or one admonition that "a lot more people would join AW" if only we'd <insert whatever issue poster has with AW>.

For Example:

A lot more people would be posting instead of just lurking if you weren't such a clique of pedantic schoolgirls.

A lot more people would join AW if we weren't so uptight about netspeak.
(R3|\/\3|\/|B3R T|-|AT B4 U DI55 |\/|3 4 MY L33T SKI|_|_5)

And finally:

If you have more than 1,000 posts, you shouldn't be flouncing at all. You're part of the wallpaper.

If you have more than 2,000, you really shouldn't go. You're a load-bearing beam.

If you have more than 7,000 posts, we're all going to beg until you come back.

So if you've got a lot of posts and issued a sub-par flounce, all I have to say is, "Tough. Flounce rejected."

Unless you're a dick. Then you can go.

I'm sorely disappointed about the disregard for the flouncing template that's been shown lately. I do give two thumbs up for the excellent flouncing example a la Lolcat demonstrated by Cray.

On the other hand, after flouncing, I half-expect the flouncer to return the next day as a Mod. Could this be?

It does seem to be happening more and more. But it totally degrades the quality of the flounce when you come back the next day, mod or not. I hate the recent lack of respect for the flounce. *shakes head*

Interesting Discovery.

Only flounce where people will notice. This is probably best done in the Water Cooler. Everyone goes there. Don't flounce in a seldom visited area of the forum.

And flounce in no uncertain terms. Don't couch the flounce in vague terms that others might not take as a flounce.

Only flounce if your presence will be missed and people might actually care.

Dear Shadow Ferret,

That's a roweled (sp?) spur and you can use it to perforate things. A stirrup hangs off a saddle, one per side except for sidesaddles. It's what you put your foot into to get up on the horse. Course if you have spurs you probably have slaves that can kneel so you can step on them and then onto the horse. :}

I have to disagree.

If I actually like the person that flounces, it takes away from the fun. It's just not as cool when the flouncer has been a regular contributor to the forums.

No, I love the lurker flounces, the newbie flounces, the I-never-post-here-but-now-I'm-gone-for-good flounces.

You know, when people pop up out of nowhere, shout insults, and run out the door. Then keep peeking back in to see what people say about it all.

Those are the really good flounces. That's why I said that if you've got a ton of posts, you shouldn't bother. It won't really be funny. But if you've got 15 posts, well, hell, flounce away, I say!

That's not to say that I don't like newbies. I love newbies. I go to bed every night curled up with a newbie (well, a newbie and our two youngest kids). Newbies are grand...they add energy and vitality to the forums.

Except when they don't.

Some of them are going to get voted off the island. And they'll be the ones doing the voting. It is to them that I say, flounce away, but do it properly, so we can all get some amusement from your passing.

AHEM. Sorry.

Wow, what an awesome thread.

But...wait a second...

My name never came up! I've been here for over a year! Participating! Offering helpful advice! Being fun! Baiting the bears! I have the death sentence on five star systems! Posting here, posting there! I have over 3,500 rep points! Making, I thought, friends, real friends, not just casual, internet friends, but friends who, when the mention of flouncing, which I have never done, and the mention of those causing a flounce, which I have tried to do and somehow, apparently, failed at, friends who would mention ME, because it's all about ME, after all, isn't it, on this great forum dedicated to writers but really to and about me, me, me, I thought I'd get at least the littlest shout out.

And yet, I read this thread and...NO MENTION OF MY NAME!

It pains me, it truly does.

That's it. It's over. I'm done. I'm gone. I thought this was a COMMUNITY but really it's just a collection of nasty individuals who never think of ME but only think of themselves.

Oh, and before I forget -- my writing is genius, all who dare to crit ME are really only critting GOD and I have no betas, other than my spouse, but he doesn't count because we are ONE, dammit, ONE, and nothing I write will EVER be edited because it comes out of my mind perfectly formed without the need of input, feedback, critique or editing, and any who try to argue that, well, I just point you to the great philosophers.

But I've really gotten a lot out of being here and I'm glad my threads started such interesting and high-spirited conversations.

Now, before I fully flounce, I have something up at SYW and I'd like you to give me your honest opinions of it before I leave.

Dang. Monkey, you spoil all my fun. I was gonna post this flounce months ago, but then I was away for a while, and, well, nobody noticed. *sniff* But, heck--here you have my patented, copyrighted mother-guilt-trip flounce:

Nobody reps me around here any more. Nobody thanks me for a good job, yet I helped raise this forum from a wee little baby to the gigantic success it is today. I wore my fingers to the bone helping out newbies, and disciplining spammers, and just being an all-round missus nice-girl. And what do I get for it? Silence! They even took away my mod status. For what? When this forum experienced the big bad blackout, I was on the computer recovering lost data 24/7, and for what???? Nobody loves me around here. Just the thread title alone, "Flouncing for Dummies" is hysterical and then I read the thread and laughed so hard I woke up the sleeping dogs. BTW, the awakened disgruntled Dachshund, Magdalene, is a born flouncer and reflouncer. If she doesn't get the attention she knows she so richly deserves, she picks up her stuffed hotdog and marches out of the room. NEVER TO RETURN. Three seconds later she's back again only to flounce away again.

Thanks for the very good laugh.

If a poet must flounce, they really should do it in iambic pentameter. Anything else would be crass and detrimental to the high status poetry gives them.

will i be burned at the stake if I admit to hating origami?

i don't know...but if you do happened to get burned, the origami will be the first thing to go up in flames. it's paper, you know. (-;

i don't have any affinity for origami either, does that make me Satan?

hmmm...I'm not sure one must hate origami to make them Satan.

Oh, I know. Do you have horns, a long tail, look perpetually sunburned and carry a sort of pitchfork?

IF you answered yes to these questions, you JUST MIGHT be. ;-)

Okay, but remember, you asked.

I'm tired of being the toilet paper to your crap!
*flushes self out of AW*

Like that?

Oh, I didn't see the Haskins one. Guess mine is now redundant, eh?

Well, I'm new here, this is only my second post, but I read this whole thread and you people have no sense of humor.

And I said in my 'introduce yourself' post that I have a blog and NOT ONE PERSON asked me about it.

So I'm out of here. Don't bother to reply to this, because I won't be checking back to see if you did.

OK, y'all, how'd I do? That was only a practice flounce. Should I put in some misspellings? I thought the caps were a nice touch.

Heh.

I can tell I'm going to like it here.

You show some real promise, but yes, spelling errors or truly egregious grammar errors will garner more points in a flounce. Also, passive-aggressive asides would help tremendously -- references to Nazis, censorship, or "gelousy" are always good.

The caps are exceedingly effective; funky text options, and multiple exclamation points are always good.

Honestly, a reference to the talentless status of the mods, board owners, and other members would probably get you right into the high 90s.

Hi. This is just my two cents. I'm critiquing your work, not you. :)

Well, I'm knew here, this is only my second post, but I read this whole thread and you peopleppl have no sensesence of humor.

And I said in my 'introduce yourself' post that I have a blog and NOT ONE PERSON asked me about it.<<<whole sentence should be in caps.

So I'm outta of here. Don't bother to reply to this, becausecuz I won't be checking back too see if you did.

OK, y'all, how'd I do? That was only a practice flounce. Should I put in some misspellings? I thought the caps were a nice touch. I know I messed with your style a bit, but the flounce will be better for it. You didn't take full advantage of homophones, exclamations, and cliches. For right now, I'll give you an E for Effort. Don't take it personally; we're all here to learn.

Also, and this is just a side-note, I'd recommend finishing it off with an emoticon. In this case, I think the standard smiley (:)) would work best; it'd be like a knowingly vengeful smile, a middle finger disguised as a happy face.

Heh.

I can tell I'm going to like it here.
