Everyone has a few blank spots in the movies they have seen, often striking others with disbelief. It's a reavealing confession that you've never seen what others consider the great movies, the blockiest of busters, popular, ubiquitous, or the seminal pieces of cinema. It's either through lack of interest, lack of exposure, or just lack of urgency.

For my wife - it's any Indiana Jones movie. She's sorta interested, and I've got the DVD's, but it never hits her priority list. If Hugh Grant is in the new one, she might come around.

For me:

Gone with the Wind - no interest
Casablanca - little interest
Easy Rider - want to, but no real urge
Clockwork Orange - tried to, never got to it

I recently crossed off Taxi Driver and Sound of Music (guess which one was at my own choosing?)

Wow, katiemac. You haven't seen Star Wars? Really? This thread can be a real eye-opener. Okay, I'm up. Haven't seen the following because either somebody raved too much about them or I couldnt stand the actors who starred in them, or they extolled over-the-top violence that I don't need to see again.

The Godfather
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (Ain't that a beotch)
Anything with Jean Claude Vandam (sp?)
Raging Bull
Full Metal Jacket
Grumpeir Old Men (Walter Mathau as a leading man?)
Ice Age II (I'll take Nemo, Toy Story, or The Hedge any day over this)
Phantasm
Hellraiser

I broke down for Click and that RV thing with Williams in it and wished I hadn't.

I thought everyone had seen star wars.

I havent seen many of De'Caprio flims, as I am not a fan. Here are a few more I havent seen.

Gone with the Wind
Clockwork Orange
The Godfather
Any of the Friday 13th films

Saw the Ghost and the Darkness recently and then got scared witless the following night. I sometime take long walks in the countryside next to my house late at night. I have my headphones in and listen to loud music. I was walking down this country road, which never has any cars go down, fields on one side, and woods on the other. There was a right hand turn on the road and I was looking across the fields to the left. Out of the corner of my eye, all I saw was this very large animal coming towards me along the road, and as I was listening to this loud music, I hadnt heard it. I nearly had a heart attack. Turns out it was a horse, but still, I almost had to change my underwear.

If I haven't seen it, it's obviously because it ISN'T a good movie.

That said, I haven't seen
Gone with the Wind
Anything with James Dean
Anything with Marlon Brando
Pretty much anything with Al Pacino
Pretty much anything with Jack Nicholson
Pretty much anything with Dustin Hoffman
Any modern mob or gangster or Mafia movie
Clockwork Orange
The Sting
Most anything made within the 20 years

Um...I would have to say...well, most of them.

When I manage to watch a movie I watch it purely for mindless entertainment and don't want anything that requires thinking on my part. Because of that, most the movies I do actually watch have hot leading men and lots of people get blown up and shot. I like watching people get shot...makes me feel better.

This thread can be a real eye-opener.
That was my intention...

The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Raging Bull
Same on both of these. I missed that window when people I knew got into Rocky Horror - I was busy enjoying Pulp Fiction and Clerks at the time.

Citizen Kane[/quote Another one I've missed. Like Psycho, I've seen it parodied too many times to really enjoy the original.

Lawrence of Arabia
Got it on Netflix last year. It was worth seeing it.

Ran (Kurosawa)
Missed it too. Only saw Seven Samurai because my first DVD player came with a free Netflix sub way back when they only had like 100 movies.

Not even Apocalypse Now? For all I know, James Dean makes sausages... :D

Add in Paul Newman and Robert Redford for me - except for Sneakers.

Any modern mob or gangster or Mafia movie
Define "modern." Casino? Donnie Brasco? Goodfellas?

I havent seen many of De'Caprio flims, as I am not a fan.
I never was either. In fact, I thoroughly disliked him. But I did see The Departed and I didn't feel the urge to punch Di Caprio once!
It could be because he's grown out of whatever 'pretty boy actor' phase he was in.

Pretty much anything with Al Pacino
Much of his 'seminal' stuff (carlitos way, scarface) doesn't do much for me. But he has done some good stuff (Scent of a Woman for one)

Again, he's done some tripe, but he can be really rather good.

The Sting
I saw this for the first time at the weekend, it's really rather good. Reminds me of the new Oceans 11

Casablanca
A lot of people say that. I like it. I prefer Maltese Falcon since romancey films aren't generally my thing.

Planet of the Apes (Charles Heston)
Ummm... that would be Charlton Heston? it's good, and a thousand times better than the Marky Mark Remake.

As for me?

Gone with the Wind
Citizen Kane
The Dirty Dozen

Hmmm... only three that spring to mind.

Um, the title is "good movies you haven't seen." This would exclude just about anything with Jean-Claude Van Damme.

Also, Walter Matthau was a hell of a leading man for years in gritty 70s cop pics and comedies with Jack Lemmon. There will be no disrespect of Walter Matthau around here.

And you really need to rent The Godfather. If you haven't seen it, you don't know anything about movies. And yes, that's a judgmental position I'm taking, but screw it. The same goes for those who haven't seen Star Wars.

Casablanca? It doesn't get much better, Matt. See it. Seriously.

I haven't seen Sound of Music or On the Waterfront; those are probably my biggest holes right now.

Not sure what you're waiting for.

Pretty much anything with Al Pacino
Start with the Godfather films. Then move on to Serpico, Dog Day Afternoon, The Insider, Donnie Brasco and Glengarry Glen Ross.

Pretty much anything with Jack Nicholson
Er, ok...Chinatown? One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest?

Pretty much anything with Dustin Hoffman
I'm starting to wonder if you even like movies.

Most anything made within the 20 years
So no Nicholson, Hoffman and Pacino, thus eliminating a truckload of good films from the 70s. Nothing from about 1986-present. No Gone with the Wind. No mob pics. What's left? Anything?

Ugh.

See The Sting, Jeremiah Johnson, Butch Cassidy, Absence of Malice, the Verdict, Nobody's Fool, Slap Shot (you haven't seen Slap Shot??), Cool Hand Luke, The Hustler, and I'll stop there.

I was having trouble with everyone listing Rocky Horror Picture Show for the same reason.

Must also add any DeCrapio films. Although, again, I'd question if anything he's done comes under the umbrella of "good" movie.

Yeah, because film wasn't invented until 1986.

They never did make any films in the 30s, 40s, 50s. No actors like Jimmy Stewart, Glen Ford, William Holden, Spencer Tracy, Katherine Hepburn, and so on.

Seeing as how he just did The Departed, Blood Diamond and the Aviator, this line doesn't work anymore.

I don't like the guy for the most part. But he's finally become a real actor, despite the amazing sucktacularness of Titanic.

Thing is, if I think it's a good movie, then I've seen it.

Popular movies I haven't seen include:

Any of the Godfather movies
Titanic
Lord of the Rings
The Departed
Forrest Gump

I'm sure the list goes on, but if it seemed good or interested me, then I've rented it.

It seems weird that some of you haven't seen Gone with the wind. How come?

I haven't seen :

The Wizard of Oz.

Ok, just kidding.

BTW : I loved The Aviator. Excellent stuff.

I have one! I haven't seen : Schindler's List. The reason is that I am too emotional about those things and know I can't handle it. My mother-n-law even has a walk-on part in it (she plays a naked Polish woman,) and I just can't bring myself to watch the movie, much to my husbands dismay.

In fact, I really steer away from anything that I already know will upset me.

It does have the burning of the Empire State building used in the original King Kong movie, though.
