Do you type or hunt and peck?

I type, probably 70-80 words a minute but I haven't tested myself in a long time. And I can delete at a rate of 100 words per minute which is what I need to type 80 wpm. In other words...I make and delete a lot of typos! :)

I type. My handwriting was so atrocious growing up that my fourth grade teacher offered to teach me how to type and let me turn in typed papers. This was real typing too. No computers. No corrections. I have no idea how many words a minute, because I haven't taken a test in more than a decade.

I've been 'typing' with no instruction for a few decades now, and I do maybe 40 wpm. What I do is some bastardization of typing, but it's closer to touch-typing than hunt-and-peck. Hmm, I have to actually type to see which fingers I use where. I use my left pinkie only for the 'a' and the left shift and control, (and maybe z or q) and it appears I don't use my right pinkie at all.

Anyone use Dvorak or other alternative key layout?

Tried the alternative, but I've been doing this too long. I couldn't master it. I'm dyslexic and trying to learn the new fingering made my head want to explode, so back to the stone ages and the qwerty for me.

I type. I used to have to look, but not anymore. I normally type at a decent clip but when my fingers are frozen (like now) pecking might even be faster. I've never liked or understood pecking. As soon as I learned to type, I was in love.

My boss types perfectly with his right hand and "pecks" with his left...I tell him he has one hand and a pecker. :D Good thing he has a great sense of humor!

I learned typing by myself because I watched my father do it and I was impressed. Now I type really fast with minimal typos thanks to messenger. And they say it only corrodes the mind :tongue

I type. I took a semester long typing class my junior year of high school. I type about 65-70 wpm but I used to type 120 wpm!

I put myself through college working as a legal secretary and paralegal and I got fast, fast, fast on the keyboard!

I type pretty fast, usually in the 70 wpm and up range. My fingers are more aware of what they're typing than my head sometimes. I'll get really into what I'm typing, my mind goes off somewhere else, and before I know it I've typed an entire page. My hands are the real writers, I'm just the bum that holds them in place :D

I type 75 wpm (when tested, and I know I slow down a bit when I'm tested), but I definitely don't type "properly". I use my middle finger on my left hand (and pinkie for the shift key). On my right hand, I use my middle and index fingers, plus thumb for the space key and pinkie for "Enter". I think my ring fingers work their way in somehow, but it's hard to type while concentrating on which fingers I use. LOL

My first job was operating a telex. It required typing blind and if the dratted tape broke once you'd finally connected to the Barbados cable office, typing live in a half-dozen languages while being charged by the second.

I can still hit about 140 wpm if I'm copy-typing. If I have to stop and think about what I'm typing it slows to about 70 wpm.

I took a typing class in high school
I took a typing course in college
I took a home learning typing course after I graduated
I didn't learn to type until I signed on to my first writer's chat room. Nothing like being thrown into the deep end of the pool to learn how to swim.

I've been typing for 25 years. Yep, I'm only 30 now, but what can I say? I've always enjoyed writing stories and when my mother bought a typewriter when I was roughly 5, I ended up using it more than she did.

It was one of those skanky old split-level keyboard things, and I kept getting my fingers grazed between the keys.

Eventually I learned to touch type, through habit. Friends have suggested going to typing school, but I don't see the point. I've said, "Why bother? I can already do 60wpm without trying!" Maybe I don't use exactly the right finger for exactly the right key according to someone else's way of doing things, but like I said, 60wpm with high accuracy, not looking at the keyboard, using all fingers and both thumbs works for me.

I sometimes write in longhand, but that's only when I want to slow the pacing down during an edit.

I type in the neighborhood of 70 wpm or more, depending on if I'm thinking about it or not.

I took typing class in High School to get out of Shop Class. Mainly cuz the girls in typing class were a lot cuter.

How odd. I took metal shop because the guys were all hot.

But for typing, I've been clocked at 98, but usually hold steady between 75 and 80.

Jings! And people tell me I'm fast! I've had people stare at me while I'm typing in amazement because I can be sitting talking to them and still typing away without checking that what I'm working on is spelled correctly.

SOMETIMES I do more than 60 - I've reached 75 before but I can't keep it up. My fingers seize up. That's my excuse anyway. ;)
