It's called The Triumph of the Thriller: How Cops, Crooks, and Cannibals Captured Popular Fiction. The author is Patrick Anderson. $25 from Random House.
Read it over the weekend. Highly recommended.
The book is a sort of retrospective of 20th Century American crime novels. Anderson makes the case that people -- he calls them, sarcastically, "experts" -- do not give enough credit to thrillers and give way too much credit to more "literary" works.
I agree, somewhat.
