The only way I can really answer that is by way of a little story -
When I was younger, the only music we had in the house were jazz and classical albums. My parents are both trained musicians, so popular music never really made the grade with them.
When my brother started high school, he began bringing home all kinds of New Wave, Next Wave, punk and early alternative albums. I started swiping a few of his albums and listening to them.
When I started college, I started getting into Irish trad, folk and blues music.
When I got married, my wife brought her Jersey Girl collection of late-80s hair bands and neo-hippie music to the house.
So what you wind up after all that is a 25-year veteran guitar player who sounds an awful lot like Mark Knopfler when he plays, but can shred when necessary, as well as throw in some pretty awesome jazz licks and classical style techniques as well.
