Lyrics and their impact

biotales

After a night out with a few friends all writers, most are musicians at best we ended up taking about the impact of song lyrics. There have been songs that have left their marks on us all. But and the question I am asking you here is: Name the song that has what you feel are life altering, not only to you but to others. I will start. This is the song that we came up with last night.
"Don't Tell Momma"
The first time I heard this song I had to pull my car over to the side of the road. On line struck me right between the eyes...

'blowin' in the wind' [© Bob Dylan 1962] should have changed things in this bleeped-up world humans have made, but human nature being what it is, it didn't make much of a dent... and not for long...:cry

How many roads must a man walk down
Before they call him a man?
How many seas must a white dove sail
Before she sleeps in the sand?
How many times must the cannon balls fly
Before they're forever banned?

The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

How many years must a mountain exist
Before it is washed to the sea?
How many years can some people exist
Before they're allowed to be free?
How many times can a man turn his head
And pretend that he just doesn't see?

The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

How many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky?
How many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry?
How many deaths will it take till he knows
That too many people have died?

The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind.
The answer is blowin' in the wind.
:cry :cry :cry :cry :cry :cry :cry :cry :cry :cry :cry :cry

re:lyrics and their impact

For me there are constantly songs that immobilize me, in both good and bad ways. As of late, Hand Me Down by MB20 struck a chord and sparked a novel. Dashboard Confessioanl's Hands Down has always pulled that "oh how I remember that night" grin across my face, and Harry Conick's rendition of Save The Last Dance pulls me out of a funk every time. -Kip

Re: re:lyrics and their impact

"Blowin in the Wind" was the first song I ever learned to play on guitar :) *sigh* aaah... memories...

SO many songs are life altering for me, and I would hope for others as well if they would take the time to actually listen to the lyrics.

To name a few...

"Hands" by Jewel
"Warning" by Incubus (the whole Morning View album actually)
"Hold On" by Sarah McLachlan
"Tonight" by the Smashing Pumpkins
"Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd
"Cats in the Cradle" by Harry Chapin (chokes me up every time)
"In the Ghetto" written by ??? (found out for the first time that Elvis Presley did a version of that song... interesting...)
"Round Here" by The Counting Crows
"Time in a Bottle" by Jim Croce

Aaah... I have to go listen to some music now :)

The Clash, AKA, The Only Band That Matters.

The politics and opinions in so many of their song lyrics sparked revolutions.

Cheers.

Re: re:lyrics and their impact

"America", originally by Simon and Garfunkel, but hit me when I heard Josh Groban sing it... I don't know what it is about those lyrics, they just evoke this wide-eyed philosophical dreamer in me.

A few that I liked.

 I liked the songs mentioned but one of the best was by Mick Jagger in House of The Rising Sun. I also liked The Dance by Garth Brooks so much that I wrote an entire novel on it. Then another one would be
Bye Bye Miss American Pie.
Drove a chevy to the levy.
But the levy was dry.
Saw the good ole boys.
Drinking whiskey and rye.
Saying this will be the day.
That I die.

Another good one by Bob Marley that has always had a great impact on me is...

REDEMPTION SONG

Old pirates, yes, they rob I;
Sold I to the merchant ships,
Minutes after they took I
From the bottomless pit.
But my hand was made strong
By the 'and of the Almighty.
We forward in this generation
Triumphantly.
Won't you help to sing
These songs of freedom? -
'Cause all I ever have:
Redemption songs;
Redemption songs.

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery;
None but ourselves can free our minds.
Have no fear for atomic energy,
'Cause none of them can stop the time.
How long shall they kill our prophets,
While we stand aside and look? Ooh!
Some say it's just a part of it:
We've got to fulfil de book.

Won't you help to sing
These songs of freedom? -
'Cause all I ever have:
Redemption songs;
Redemption songs;
Redemption songs.

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery;
None but ourselves can free our mind.
Wo! Have no fear for atomic energy,
'Cause none of them-a can-a stop-a the time.
How long shall they kill our prophets,
While we stand aside and look?
Yes, some say it's just a part of it:
We've got to fulfil de book.
Won't you help to sing
Dese songs of freedom? -
'Cause all I ever had:
Redemption songs -
All I ever had:
Redemption songs:
These songs of freedom,
Songs of freedom.

So many...

I hate to admit Robbie Williams, but this line from Feel goes through my head often:
I don't want to die
But I ain't keen on living either

The American David Wilcox (folk singer, as opposed to Canadian punk rocker David Wilcox) has a whole bunch of songs that really get to me.

That's What The Lonely Is For

from: Big Horizon

The depth of your dreams, the height of your wishes
The length of your vision to see, the hope of your heart
Is much bigger than this
For it's made out of what might be

Now picture your hope, your heart's desire -
As a castle that you must keep
In all of its splendor, it's drafty with lonely
This heart is too hard to heat

Chorus:

When I get lonely ah, that's only a sign
Some room is empty, and that room is there by design
If I feel hollow - that's just my proof that there's more
For me to follow - that's what the lonely is for

Is it a curse or a blessing this palace of promise
When the empty chill makes you weep
With only the thin fire of romance to warm you
These halls are too tall and deep

Chorus

But, you can seal up the pain, build walls in the hallways
Close off a small room to live in
But those walls will remain, and keep you there always
And you'll never know why you were given... why you were given the lonely

Some room is empty
If I feel hollow that's just my proof that there's more
For me to follow - that's what the lonely is for

From the deep of your dreams, the height of your wishes
The length of your vision to see, the hope of your heart
Is much bigger than this
For it's made out of what might be

Chorus

The best broken-heart song...

Language Of the Heart
(David Wilcox, from How Did You Find Me Here?)

We made our warm bed out of blankets in the meadow way up high
You took off your dress in the moonlight, to sleep beneath the sky
Your touch was a warm summer ocean
Your kiss made the whole mountain fly
And you looked deep with in me and smiled
At the tears in my eyes

Chorus

You can say that you always were honest
And your words were clear from the start
But its more than just words that got spoken
There was language of the heart

I won't keep on calling your number if you never have the time
I don't want to claim you or blame you, but you're always on my mind
You had no idea I would love you
It comes as a total surprise
And you shake your head slowly and smile
At the tears in my eyes

Chorus

Your eyes like an ocean of clear sunlit green
My eyes with the salt water
Wash me clean....again

And just imagine you whispered a secret that could take away my blues
And you let me believe it to please me, though it just wasn't true
You just meant to share with me pleasure
And your gifted at what you do
But your speaking an unspoken language
I thought that you knew
It's one that we all learn by heart
And our hearts think its true

Chorus

that one has always done it . . . probally because i've moved so much i feel a sense of distanct from home--much like the song conveys to me.

I'll play...but please don't laugh at me! The song that had the greatest impact on my life is The Smith's Ask. I can't vouch for it having an impact on anybody but me.

Shyness is nice, and
Shyness can stop you
From doing all the things in life
You'd like to

I used to be painfully shy, and then one day I heard this song in college and it all made sense. Shyness could stop me from doing all the things in life I wanted to! At the time, it was a real revelation.

Vincent

by Don MacLean (yeah, the American Pie guy)
Many call this song by one of its lines "Starry, Starry nights" but Vincent is correct.

Favorite partial thought/line: "How you suffered for your sanity..."

Also, wasn't House of the Rising Sun by the Animals? sung by Eric Burdon (sp?) I thought.

Another fun song from that era was (Hey There) Little Red Riding Hood. Maybe I'm just into guys who can howl. LOL!

Ya'll will probably run me off, but I like a lot of the songs by John Prine. He is a very good poet.

A mocha man in a wigwam
Sitting on a reservation
With a big black hole in the belly of his soul
Waiting on an explanation
While the white man sits on his fat can
And takes picture of the Navajo
Everytime he clicks-His Kodak Pic-
He steals a little bit of soul

I also dig some old songs by Kristofferson, Pink Floyd...Lisa Presley I like, very dark and raw.

I don't know if any of this would be considered life changing, but I get into it.

Waltz #2

By Elliott Smith...this melancholy masterpiece is one of my favorite all time songs, with one of the greatest lines ever penned in a rock song...
"I'm never gonna know you now
But I'm gonna love you anyhow"

Full lyrics:

First the mic then a half cigarette
Singing 'Cathy's Clown'
That's the man she's married to now
That's the girl that he takes around town

She appears composed, so she is, I suppose
Who can really tell?
She shows no emotion at all
Stares into space like a dead china doll

I'm never gonna know you now
But I'm gonna love you anyhow

Now she's done and they're calling someone
Such a familiar name
I'm so glad that my memory's remote
Cause I'm doing just fine hour to hour, note to note

Here it is, the revenge to the tune
"You're no good,
You're no good you're no good you're no good"
Can't you tell that it's well understood

I'm never gonna know you now
But I'm gonna love you anyhow

I'm here today and expected to stay on and on and on
I'm tired
I'm tired

Looking out on the substitute scene
Still going strong
XO, Mom
It's ok, it's alright, nothing's wrong

Tell Mr. Man with impossible plans to just leave me alone
In the place where I make no mistakes
In the place where I have what it takes

I'm never gonna know you now
But I'm gonna love you anyhow
I'm never gonna know you now
But I'm gonna love you anyhow
I'm never gonna know you now
But I'm gonna love you anyhow

For the longest time I had a theme song "Angel of the Morning" ... I have since healed and moved on. It no longer defines or owns me.

Now, I enjoy many songs that speak to my heart and touch my soul. Maybe one day I will join you tallented song writers, until then, I will sing along :)

As a young man with Aspergers' Syndrome (a high-functioning form of autism), I've always felt somewhat adrift. I can't pick up on people's jokes, I talk with adults more than I do with people my own age (I'm 22 years old), and I've always wondered why I seem to be the only person I know of with the beliefs that I hold.

Because of that, I relate to the song "Us And Them" by Pink Floyd. It really expresses the loneliness that I think we all feel at one point or another when we look at the world around us.

Sincerely,

John Kilduff
