A few weeks ago, I wrote a tech review for a friend's product for him to send to one of the sailing magazines. This week, as I was covering a big regatta for a website, the editor of that mag sent me an e-mail with the edited version, told me it'll run next month, and concluded with this line:

Let me know if you’d like to step into the author rotation at [XYZ] magazine. You’ve got a good feel for the sport and your writing doesn’t suck.

Is there a 'typical' system of author rotation that editors use? I'd like to be more knowledgeable about industry standards, if there are any, before I reply to him.

Thanks in advance.

Clean, which sailing mag? I know most of them pretty well.
I think what the editor is saying is, "hey, want a job writing for us?"

I means that they will send out assignments to you overy month or every couple of months. I'm on rotation for a roller skating magazine, and I get paid better and get frequent assignments. Regular "on spec" freelancers make less and don't get assignments.

ETA: I get an article about once a month.

If you were given an option to join the writer rotation, then "your writing doesn't suck" must be a good critique. :D

Congratulations on the offer - regardless of your decision.
