Here are the choices for the next round of the AW Book Club (I tried to narrow it down to things more than one person seemed interested in and what might be relatively easy to obtain, either from the bookstore or the library)... in no particular order:

Fiction:
The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency - Alexander McCall Smith
Possession - A.S. Byatt
I Know This Much is True - Wally Lamb
Terrorist - John Updike
The Ox-Bow Incident - Walter Van Tilburg Clark
Beach Road - James Patterson

Nonfiction:
Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers - Mary Roach

YA:
How I Live Now - Meg Rossoff

Links go to Amazon pages for a brief synopsis of the book. Voting will close in one week, January 27th. Vote away!

Oh this is an interesting list. I really have enjoyed Wally Lamb. But I'm kinda in the mood for Patterson, if this book delivers well. Although, I have been wanting to read some Y.A....

I voted for the Meg Rossoff. I read the book once, but would love to read it again and discuss.

I've narrowed it down to the first two.
I'll vote soon.
(Anyway, I'll probably read them both regardless)

'I Know This Much Is True' is wonderful, even though it deals with a bleak subject matter that most writers would turn into a melodrama, Wally Lamb creates poetic journey that revels not just in the massive landscape of the novel but the domestic essence of the protagonist's relationships. I also love the opening page, it is so understated, calm and reflective in strains of black humour. It's a horrible thing to happen in a public library but the prose style reflects the normally calm nature of such an institution. I love those old libraries, they are calming.

Looks like I Know This Much is True is the winner. This is a pretty hefty book, so let's shoot for Wednesday, February 28 as the day we start the discussion. Thanks to everyone who voted!
