Pagan Publishers

For pagan suspense type books, there's Willow Tree Press, the publisher that publishes MR Sellar's books.

I've worked with Llewellyn and they are super-easy to deal with. ('cept when I missed one of my deadlines because my proposal was sent to my editor's spam file and was inadvertently deleted!!! No dice - lost the deal.) I've yet to encounter a single big-ego with any of them and they are very open and clear about what they want. No guessing games, really.

They are UBER picky about fiction, though. They have very specific thoughts on what metaphysical fiction they will publish. While they do publish fiction, they mostly focus on non-fiction.

Llewellyn is the biggest name I am aware of. For others just check any new age/occult store

Carole, what direction does Llewellyn trend with fiction? Can you encapsulate any specifics, or is it just "they know it when they see it"?

This past year, Llewllyn started a new division of fiction, called Midnight Ink. They appear to specialize mostly in mystery, paranormal, that sort of thing. Definitely worth checking out. I've got an ms in to them for review right now.

The last thing that's actually in print right now is an article for the 2007 Magical Almanac on magical herbalism. (They don't accept the "k" in magick in any of their annuals)

I lost my last deal when my proposal went to my editor's spam box and he didn't know it until it was past the deadline. (had a hard time swallowing that!)

I do have two other articles sitting with them. Him, actually. Hoping to hear something soon. It's way too early for the next round of annuals, but I also didn't want to miss another deadline!

I've proposed a non-fiction book and so far it's looking really good. I gained their interest with my title alone, if you can believe that!

I think a post was eaten where I said that Patti seems to know a lot more about their fiction than I do. I am totally out of the loop on that.

One thing I can tell you (in my experience) is that if they're familiar with your name, it seems as though your fiction moves to the top of the pile a little quicker than otherwise. When they asked me to submit my full ms to Midnight Ink, the editor indicated that because I had articles in their 2007 & 2008 Herbal Almanacs, that made me "part of the Llewellyn family".

I don't know if that means they'll actually LIKE my ms, but they did respond fairly quickly to my query.
