. . . . I have no idea of the approximate value.

It's E. E. "Doc" Smith's Second Stage Lensman, hardback, ragged dust jacket but intact, of a first edition of 5,000 copies, it is numbered and autographed to "William J. Gurley" I acquired it decades ago at a library sale for a ridiculously low price ($.49). Anyone have any idea what the value might be?

Is it 1953. if so....it's $495.00 listed on Ebay.

Famous writer, so it's gonna be worth something... is there a SOLD copy on eBay? I know they only list the last few weeks of closed auctions now unless you pay big bucks for access to their "research" feature.
Try looking up the book here:
http://bookfinder.com
and look at the asking prices for signed copies in about the same condition (probably Good with Fair DJ). In the hundreds sounds about right to me, but double-check for yourself.
