Hello, I'm doing some re-writes and chopping of my manuscript and I need another word for "couldn't." I've used the word twice in the same paragraph (for the repetition effect), but I've used it a third time too many.

I've brainstormed all of the obvious choices, but they didn't seem to work. :flag:

I'd have to see the sentence.

was unable to?

Can you post the sentence?

Have you considered re-writing the sentence altogether to avoid the necessity of the word?

Thanks! I've used one of the suggestions above. :) You've all been very helpful.
