It's only been two minutes since the postman slipped it into the letter box. I have my first international cheque -- $$$$$$$$$$$$$$

And I can't stop looking at it. I don't want to lose it! My dad's returning to town today and then we'll decide what we do with it -- until then I can look at it...:D

Hopefully you have an international account to cash it with.

I actually set up a special account for international money. I found it makes life easier. It's online and I try to get international accounts to pay with wire transfers.

Yes, you don't get a check to hold, but it's far less headaches, at least when you live in smaller town without a lot of banking options.

Mr Zakour is quite correct.

Without knowing your banking / credit circumstances, with Mr. Zakour's statement as background, I would suggest that you might like to examine the link below to a number of threads dealing directly with this issue.

http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/search.php?searchid=1258208

If it doesn't work, then go to the Freelance forum search engine/archives, and try entering the word 'international' or in the advanced search section, and key word 'international' (both searches minus the single quotation marks).

Depending on your finacial circumstances, you might also like to consider NOT cashing the cheque, but saving it and actually having it professionally mounted and framed. Think of it as the professional equivalent of dipping into liquid gold and its solidifying of one's first pair of baby shoes (I can't remember the expression).

The other thing that can be helpful is to let your agent handle the international checks as most agents already have international accounts and such. Then they can take out their % and cut you a US check.

Way cool, spidey!

I make a few writing-related bucks outside the country, and I have an account set up to shunt a portion into for tax time since the international stuff doesn't take off deductions like a regular domestic paycheque.

Well, Sury, just to make handling of money easier. I'll discuss it with dad though. I'm no finanacial guru.

Wow! You are from India? Me, too!
