we have a pretty happenin' poetry forum here at AW, but obviously it attracts only a fraction of the overall population of the community.

so out of curiosity—and maybe even to have a fun little discussion—i thought i would post a poll to see what all you fine folks think about poetry.

feel free to elaborate on your response.

I don't just enjoy it... I love it. I love Poe's poetry - especially 'Alone'.

Poe is one of my very favorite authors. LOVE him. Not surprisingly, my favorite is The Raven. :D

I like reading some poetry, but my writing of it seems limited to "Nantucket" limericks and other rhyming smut. :D

I voted that I write poetry, but am not a poet. I love reading, writing, and analyzing poetry, but it's not my main area. For me to write it, it's cheap therapy. LOL

I'm not much of a writer, and even less of a poet. But I've tried my hand at it.

I need an option in between it's the main thrust option 1 and its a sideline option 2. It is in fact, equally important to my other writing. i write as much and care as much about poetry as I do about my other writing. (and share it more readily).
So what option for us 'tweeners? I chose "other"

Voting seems to show what we instinctively know: poetry is a form of writing, and it interests us in a variety of intensity, each to his own measure.

Emphasis mine.

I remember an earlier discussion about this point: some feel that calling oneself a poet is pretentious, and they prefer to say they write poetry. I felt that impulse, but, well, I decided I'd be better off to back myself and own up to the title.

Then again, maybe the difference between writing a poem and being a poet is an analog for the difference between telling a lie and being a liar.

Ohhhh, that's interesting. We are writers because we write...so I suppose you could say that if we attempt to write poetry, we're poets. LOL. I guess I didn't classify myself as a poet because I'm not pursuing publication for it, nor do I seek recognition for my poetry...but then again, some writers are the same way with their writing, and they still call themselves writers. I think. LOL

I checked the first option, but really I'm a poet that doesn't write (enough) poetry. I doubt I'll ever satisfy my urge to write.
I'm not a good poet nor a published one, don't know if I ever will be or even care. Okay, wait, I do care if it's good. However, doing it poorly doesn't stop me from wanting to do it, it just frustrates my efforts.

does that mean you don't read it either?

I had to read some poetry in an English class once....not a fun experience! I nearly pulled my hair out when we had to analyze it.

Does anyone care to read my Kinky The Clown poem again? I'm rather proud of it...

I love poetry and do write some, but I don't take enough time for either. I wouldn't call myself a poet, but once in a while I come up with a decent one.

Sometimes I get this awful itch
that can only be scratched
by the fingernails of prose
on a chalkboard

When I want to reach out
to the edges of hell
or whatever you call
that other place

words fall out
at a measured pace
and chaos leads
to ordered states

Then I'm a poet
no matter how
the thoughts
come out

I enjoy reading the poetry forums, and I can knock out a haiku or two if the urge takes me. But anything more that that is a mystery to me I'm afraid. I enjoy the work of others here, but I don't feel qualified or competant to comment on it.
