Dear Martha:
Thanks for sending along the opening pages of The Banshee's Song. Truth be told, I'm afraid these pages just didn't draw me in as much as I had hoped. I'm pressed for time these days and, what with my reservations about the project, I suspect I wouldn't be the best fit. Thanks so much for contacting me, though, and for giving me this opportunity. It's much appreciated, and I'm sorry to be passing. I wish you the very best of luck in your search for representation.
Best,
Andrea

At least she was very nice about it.

That's a lot better than the first one I got, three years ago. They declined to even look at it!

BTW, I've seen that wording before. It's a personalized form rejection.

Yep, it's one of the "nice" forms. Everybody gets or has gotten them. It's part of the growing process.

Ah, we always remember our first. That was my first rejection, too! (Well, the first one where pages were included, anyway). Sorry to hear that it didn't work out for you. There are plenty of agents--keep on querying!

Hang in there--and prepare yourself. It will get worse before it gets better, but it will get better. These boards are great for community support, so make yourself at home!

Very sorry to hear about your rejection. The nice rejections are real keepers, though. Good luck with your agent hunt! :)

Ah, we always remember our first.

Yes, my first by Marion Zimmer Bradley was so scathing I didn't write for about a year afterwards. That was a very courteous rejection in comparison.

She looked mean.

Live and learn, then try again. That's the plan anyway.

Think of it this way: at least you're querying. Now don't look back and keep on going.

Like clara said, congratulations! You're querying. You're on the road. Good for you! Woohoo!

Keep querying. Keep writing. Keep going. Don't let a rejection get you down. It's just part of the process. :)

Don't give up. It will only be a matter of time before someone snaps up your work. Meanwhile, keep sending those query letters and we'll be wishing you all the best.
