This is going to sound kind of weird, but I'm going to have to deal with it very soon in my novel during revisions.

Here's the setup: My MC has built a machine to catch ghosts. And it works! However, there's a problem. If the proper precautions are not taken, the ghost that the machine brings will possess whoever is nearby. That possessed person will now "be" whoever the ghost was in real life. Only a fault by the machine can "release" the ghost from the possessee.

But here's the twist: after the possession, the possessee now retains some aspect or like/dislike of the ghost. In the MC's case, he turns into a chain smoker because that's what the person who possessed him was in life.

In the case of a female character, the ghost has some strange effects on her including that she becomes horny all the time and starts taking in lovers every other day.

Now, aside from her taking in lovers and saying "I'm horny!" how does a woman "show" that she's horny? Having been married for ten years, I dare not ask my wife this oddball question.

Thanks, I told you it sounded weird.

Saying "Oh, I'm so drunk" usually works at closing time in a bar.

I can't WAIT to see the valuable info this thread exposes.

Unfortunately, I've been married twice as long as you have, and all I can contribute is, after enough persistence on my part, she'll roll her eyes, issue a deep sigh, shake her head from side to side as if to say, "Why me, Lord?" and then reluctantly flop herself onto the matrimonial bed without ever uncrossing her arms.

Hey, but it works for me.

Try a google search for "sexual signals".

There are several excellent sites that explain the non-verbal communication that indicates readiness for mating. I recently saw a PBS show about the differences by gender; for example: women touch their hair (the hair flick), do incidental touching (put their hand on the man's arm, touch his face, etc.); both sexes widen their eyes when they are interested; men stand up straighter and may shift their gaze slightly lower (appreciating the landscape so to speak).

For those of us that have been married a long time less subtle techniques are often just as reliable for example wait until he's asleep and then....;)

I just jump on my husband and start pulling his clothes off. It usually gets the message across. He gets irritated when I do it in public, though.

That's a good question right now.
Showing interesting, being attracted, to another individual is different than being "horny." The first is a psychological reaction. The second is a physiological reaction.

NO NO NO...You guys are doing this all wrong! Now, I'm in my mid twenties and have had plenty of time to think, no ponder on this...

First of all, it is a novel and you will be writing in the head and what she feels emotionally and physically...sometimes a "horny" person is wired to feel that way and to want it alot!

A woman feeling the presence of this being in her would first off start feeling tingly, hot and painful down there. Not because she is in pain so to say, but because she is so horny that her clit is swelling and hurting from the hormones. This is actually a fact and will happen to people going through puberty and who are sexually frustrated.

The pubic region swells and secretes fluid, mention this in light ways to explain how "Hot and Bothered" she is. Don't just tell, show it, make her feel it and make her hurt from the need to be with someone.

Not to mention...I read some Ted Bundy books and he told about men doing this. If your ghost is man or woman, it will happen. Everyone does this when hot and bothered. Imagine if you will someone who turns you on so badly, then walks out the door! How will you feel walking around? What will you feel down there?

OK, assuming that she is horny but is a bit too sophisticated to just grab the bull by the "horns" (as it were) -- I imagine she'd get her point across/show her interest by complimenting the nearest male on his physique ... indulge in some double entendre ... take every/any opportunity to touch him, tease him ...

Or she could be really kinky and tell the object of her affections "I'd love to have sex/make love/go to bed/" or whatever, "with you. Right now."

I saw the same PBS show threedogpeople saw. Physical changes include flushed cheeks. If the woman is with someone she likes, she might mimic his actions unconsciously. It was a good show and worth googling.

Good advice there.

The hardest part is showing the need without going over the top. The most erotic passages I've ever read have very little physical contact, yet interesting build-ups that are consummated not so much in a physical sense, but in a way that makes the story entirely satisfying without giving away the aspects of copulation.

Maybe I'm just a prude. I feel the same way about overt sexuality in films when little or nothing is left to ponder.

As a reader, how am I supposed to imagine things are exciting if all the work has been done for me?

That is movies...in novels you need to just let it go. Edit out what is not needed later on. I believe you should write the full out sex and fun up front then take it out later if you find a way you might like better on the expressions.

What about just having her act easy? That never fails to catch a man's attention.

Embarrassing story ahead:

On my first date with my fiance, I (was not thinking about sex, honest!) mentioned a dirty mind. We were joking about something and he said he didn't have one and he cleaned it every day in the shower. I (being sweet and innocent, honest!) said I hoped he did and that it wouldn't attract many girls if he didn't keep it clean. He was like, "You're thinking of something else, I think." (Ooops! Got caught there!)

Then I mentioned something else, totally about sex, and never noticed what I said (God, no wonder he was calling before I made it home!).

Sometimes, a dirty mind and a few Freudian slips can make a huge difference in a man's ideals.

Flirting.. heavy flirting.
During dinner, she may ask "Are you hungry?" and wink at him.

Of course, grabbing his ass or playfully slapping it works too.
There are so many creative ways to show horniness.

Every woman does it differently hence the male proclivity for many partners.

In this case she is possessed so it wouldn't be her natural behavior. Is the ghost simply horny or does it have issues and ulterior motives? Was it horney in life or did it spend scores of years regretting being too repressed?

Personally I'm much more touchy than usual when horny - leaning up against people, cuddling them, petting their hair, rubbing my face against them like a cat, etc.

Is the character simply horny? Or is she interested in the world knowing she is horny? There are two different behaviors involved there. If a woman finds herself having dirty thoughts midway through a boring meeting or something, her face may flush but no one will really know why because she's trying to hide it. She may subconciously start fiddling with an object like a pen (hi, phallic) or shifting in her seat, but these are also signs of boredom so it's difficult to tell.

A lot of behaviors that men interpret as flirty are generally subconcious on the part of women. I've heard a lot of men say that if a woman plays with her hair, she wants you. Possibly. But I also play with my hair if it's, say, blowing in my face, or falling in my drink.

Assuming the idea is true that men have a sexual thought every seven seconds, they somehow manage to not have sex with the pizza delivery girl, the female plumber, the female coworker, the female bank teller, and so on. Unless you're writing a porno movie, she'll probably have the thought, get turned on, and then move on with the rest of her day.

Thinking about it every seven seconds can't translate into doing it every seven seconds.

So, mostly, if you're writing from her POV, she'll have the thought, have a flash of some image of her and someone else doing it, and then she'll snap back to reality.
