It's one thing when the local bozos maul the language. That's why they remain the local news people, because their skills are not up to the standards of the national or international media.

Last night, our whole family had just finished a movie and was channel surfing minutes after Saddam was executed. More than half the stations where we heard the news (often a bulletin interrupting a broadcast) announced this:

Saddam Hussein has been hung.

A shocking lack of decorum, to discuss his physical attributes at this time, don't you think?

Maryn, firm believer in hanged

I'm sure there's a 'Saddam's bloody well hung' joke in there somewhere.

The man was vile. Please, dear God, don't let us dwell on his, well, more prominent attributes. "Hanged" is correct. Otherwise we'll end up discussing everything from how he was *coughs delicately* hung to length and duration, which are not always the same thing.

Amy, who gets the willies just thinking about it. Heh. I said willies.

Can't resist telling you this thread gave me a laugh.

I think everybody, no matter what vile deeds they perpetrated while alive, is entitled to dignity in death. Saddam has paid for his crimes with his life. Surely he should be left to rest in peace.

I think an murdering SOB while alive, a murdering SOB after death. Sadam will never pay for all his crimes, his death doesn't make up for a million deaths he caused, unless hell also lasts an eternity.

I don't want him to have dignity in death, and I definitely do not want him to rest in peace.

I know that once I release a thread into the world it is no longer mine, but I hope we can limit our observations to the board's subject matter, grammar (and its amusing or dismaying misuse), rather than allowing it to devolve into politics.

Pretty please?

Maryn, who no longer remembers how to curtsy

I still don't think we should laugh at dead people.

Canadian Broadcasting Corp (http://www.cbc.ca/world/story/2006/12/29/saddam-dead.html). has a version here, few errors I expect. We were trained to be better that private broadcaster.

Agreed, and calling for him to have no peace after death takes away from the dignity and humanity of the person uttering such words.

That said, I agree with Maryn that this thread should return to a discussion of grammar.

Channel Four in Britain was grammatically correct this evening. :)

I still don't think we should laugh at dead people.I don't know about anybody else, but I was laughing at broadcast journalists.

Maryn, who does this regularly

Maryn, thanks to you I channel surfed today, checking out newsreaders. I didn't hear any 'hungs' though.

At CBC it's an internal joke to call it the Canadian Broad-corping Castration and I have said it on air, nobody noticed. We had a store called Arctic Ventures everyone called the Arctic Vulture. We were so darned articulate it hurt. I have my own blooper tape. "the weather is mainly weather and mild."

We had headlines like "Saddam Hangs".

Hangs what? Pictures, shadowboxes, signposts, what?

We also had "Saddam Hung". Oh my, please don't tell me he's auditioning for American Idol! Is Saddam Hung William's brother?

One said "Say hi to Hitler". But that was the Philadelphia Daily News, from whom I've come to expect no less.

Saddam hanged or was hanged, or just plain executed is correct.

Newpapers. Whaddyagonnado?

At least the local rag got it right. But they usually get it's right, too, so I expected no less.

Maryn, with no such expectations of the local CBS affiliate

Horses are hung. So too, I believe, are clothes.

People are hanged.

And pretty women are ba--OW!

Who threw that!?

I agree it should have been 'Hanged'. I think, however, it could just be the person who wrote it was excited to the point they forgot good grammar?

Just making a guess...

Not to mention, according to his mistress, he really wasn't. Plus they found Viagra in practically every room of every palace. Gilded pill boxes with the days of the week and all.

So long as he's DEAD.

People (living) are hanged. Objects are hung. So if he had been shot first, his body would have been hung, but since he was living at the time, he was hanged.

There is a number of references to being Hung, Drawn and Quartered (http://www.elizabethan-era.org.uk/elizabethan-executions.htm)

Perhaps the language has changed.

So long as he's DEAD.

<sigh> Only to be replaced by another evil.

Premise for a WIP, hero with 'borrowed' starship, transporter and mind penetrating machine secretly cleans the planet, reverses global warming and doesn't even ask to get laid.:guns:

That one should sell well.
