Today I wrote 1,500 words on my WIP (Chapter 21) and culled Chapter 22.

So far I'm at 61,000 words and I don't think I'm going to make my goal of 90,000, although I might get 80,000 if I'm lucky with my draft. It looks like I'm going to have to find some more subplots to work on. I'm sure with another one or two, I might be able to squeeze another 10,000 words into the piece altogether, if not 20,000.

However, this might just be my Mid-Book Blues coupled with my Depression, talking. There's no real way to tell how many words I'm going to get until I actually finish the draft. But so far as I can tell, my original goal will probably be cut short by at least 10,000 words.

So I'm not exactly thrilled right now, except with the fact I only have 12 more chapters to finish in the draft.

There's no real way to tell how many words I'm going to get until I actually finish the draft.

It always amazes me when writers are able to put down how many words a novel will be.

Maybe I'm not mathematically inclined (My ninth grade algebra teacher would not argue this...) but I can't tell for anything how long an idea will go. I pretty much go with the thought that it's done when it's done and that's how many words I got.

Congrats on the 2500 words today. I must say Sean, your inspiring me to set aside time to write every day. For five running, I've gone out to my car with a laptop, plopped on the radio, and today got in 2100.

Seriously, thanks for the hard work. It's making me try that much harder and realize it can be done.

just a couple hundred words so far, but I plan on finishing this chapter at the very least and hopefully starting the next.

It always amazes me when writers are able to put down how many words a novel will be.

...Snipped.

Actually, I use something called the '250 method' for calculating how much work I have done. It basically works with an average of 250 words per page, using certain formatting. As far as how long the piece will be, that's merely my target word count, or my goal.

There are a couple threads in the 'Writing Novels' section of the boards that can explain the 250 method far better than I can. I believe one is a sticky thread at the top of that section.

I hope this helps, and I wish you the best with your work.

Hi everyone,

I wanted you all to know I wrote another 9 pages on my WIP today. Since I started out so early and finished my daily time quota, I figured I would finish out Chapter 22. I actually said I was going to cull that chapter, but it turned out to be necessary to the proper telling of the story. So now I've written out 15 pages altogether today, which translates to 3,750 words. My total page count now for the WIP is 253, and my word count total so far is 63,250.

I'm thinking I might actually make a little bit more of a word count total when I finish the book, as well. I had forgotten, with Chapter 21, that most of my chapters have been longer than those in my outlines. So I could easily have as much as another couple dozen pages added to the remainder of the chapters of my work. I still have no idea if I'll reach 90,000 words, but at least I'm going to do my best to get there.

I hope you all have a good weekend ahead, and I hope to talk to you all again soon.

:)

didn't write today, or yesterday, probably not tomorrow.
I want to write. Too tired. And in the process of packing and moving.
Plus I'm stuck trying to find out about fraternity pins from late 1950s in order to complete the scene.

I fixed a short story I wrote yesterday, and found a contest I'll submit it to. I'll just have to fix it over a couple more times. I still have time, the contest's deadline is July.

I also began rewriting my WIP because it was pure drivel and I didn't like it at all. I've written 2000 words and counting. This has been a good, productive day.

I just finished a chapter that has been a thorn in my side all week! Phew. I'm glad I won't have to revisit that one for a while. Onward to Chapter 6 tomorrow.

I also opened my "notes" file for my novel and typed up all the ideas I'd gotten over the past few days that I hadn't written down. Many, many more bullet points than I'd expected. I'm so glad I took the time to write those down tonight. I need to get in the habit of opening that file every day.

6 more pages tonight, and I ended at the top of Page 260 of the WIP, although I'm not done with the page. I've taken it out of the typewriter, though, because I don't want it bent in the morning.

So now I'm officially at the 65,000 word mark with my WIP. If I want a total of 90,000 words, I have to do Page 260 plus another hundred pages.

I hope I can do it.

So far this morning I have editted WIP chapter 4, written a half dozen posts on various message boards - honey do list, probably not much writing today.

Jack Nog

Bah, I've got so much on my honey do list, it's silly. So in an excuse to run to the store this morning, I sat in the parking lot for twenty minutes and shot out 800 words. Sounds alright for twenty minutes, but not when I consider that it might be the only time I get to write on a long weekend...BAH.

Email, and more email. Once a week I read my pseudonyms' email (three accounts - delete 99.9% of it. I write replys to my personal email. I have an insurance guy who keeps wanting me to come see him, says he has "work for hire," like why doesn't he just send me the work - I'm not driving 90 miles to get an insurance pitch. Anyway, I send him the same email - show me the money.

Well, I continued the saga of Tanner Delgado the hippie-slayer, which is turning out to be not as lame as I thought. I think I pulled off about 1,500 words.

Disclaimer: I don't actually have anything against hippies, and none of them actually die in Tanner's saga.

Not sure of the word count, but I've finished editing chapter two on a second WIP and it's turned into a real corker. I knew I wanted to change the tone of the story and I have, but one of the characters has turned into a real [email protected]$$ who refuses to doesn't apologize for his behavior in this chapter (don't know yet if he refuses; just that he doesn't apologize by the end of the chapter). :e2cry: Wow. Um...I have to go be depressed somewhere. Or take a shower and go to bed. Also need to keep the melodrama scaled back so the novel doesn't become embarrassing. But it's still early, and I'm about to start editing chapter three.

Dropped another 1000 words yesterday bringing my total for the long weekend here in the U.S. to around 2400 words.

That's pretty good for me considering up until this weekend, I'd always counted out the weekends due to family and home obligations. So for the past eight or nine weekends; zilch. This weekend; 2400 words...Not bad not bad.

I also got a new idea for a story on my way to work today. I typed it up and filed it away for later. Must...stay...focused...on...WIP.

Today's word count is looking up. Boss is out, not much work besides a couple of emails and revisions to Work docs, then it's WIP time.

Am about to send a novel out on query again, so I'm doing a bit of a polish to try and cut it down from 110K (It's fantasy) and get a synopsis written at the same time. So far I've cut about 2K words.

I actually had to leave the forums for a couple days to get the word count back up. So don't feel bad about it, and maybe try giving yourself a time limit with the forums. That might help. :)

Today I wrote three chapters of my WIP, and I finished 18 pages of writing. That translates to 4,500 words. I am amazed I've done so well today, as I started out pretty depressed and unable to do the writing to any effectiveness this morning. I didn't really get started until this afternoon. But the time I'm spending away from the forums has been helping quite a bit and I'm quite happy with the results.

Right now, my WIP is at the 79,250 word mark. Another three pages and I'll have my novel at 80,000 words, and I still have five chapters to go. If I can get those five chapters to a little over forty pages, I can feasibly get my work to the 90,000 word mark. This is going to be a close one, but so far my extra focus on one of the main characters has yielded me at least 7,000 more words.

I hope you all have a good day today, and I'll talk to you all later.

:)

However, I doubt I'll take the entire day off as I have one more chapter to edit in my WF WIP and I really, really, really want to get that finished as it's the third full edit of the ms. And I'd really, really, really like to move on and not deal with my mc's problems/conflicts anymore.:D

I don't know what happened, but yesterday I wrote four pages in a new chapter and I saved it to my UBS and my hard drive and it wasn't there today. I searched everywhere for it and it vanished. I must've hit the wrong thing, I guess. Anyway, I had to rewrite the opening scene for that chapter.

2000-ish words of ESL tests and curriculum materials. My day job. Writing multiple-choice questions is a slow process, and 2000 words of that stuff represents a LOT of time!

Almost 2000 words of my YA novel. Am beat. Will finish chapter tomorrow. It's a fun one.

Yesterday I didn't write anything new, although I did edit Chapter 4 of my manuscript. The chapter is about 3,750 words long, so the day went decently for me.

I still have to put the edited work into my computer, though, which shouldn't take too long.

And I haven't touched my new short yet, aside from the outline I wrote for it the other day. That might change later today, although I'm not certain of it yet.

I'm still editing a manuscript which started out as my 2004 NaNoWriMo entry, but I've fleshed out to make a romance a lot more plausible. During the course of adding chapters this past spring, I noticed I hadn't quite shaken the NaNo mindset and I'd shamelessly padded for word count. Once I'm finished, I'm probably going to go back and recheck the first six chapters (again).

I generally got more writing done in my longhand days than my typing days (until recently). I enjoyed the physical act of writing until my hand was tired, shaking it out, and then writing some more. There was no pesky word count button to look at, and certainly no Internet one click away. Sometimes I think about writing longhand drafts again.

I get a lot done on the computer these days because I asked my husband to give me deadlines. Before we started the deadlines, though, I would slog through maybe 100 - 200 words a day.

2,500 words on the 2nd Draft, and I finished my play-by-play outline. The outline is 6 pages of longhand writing. I'll be putting together my actual 1st Draft of the short story either on the typewriter or the word processor. Probably the typewriter, as it's more difficult to correct mistakes and therefore I cannot edit while I'm in the process of writing the piece out.

So I figure I probably wrote, perhaps, 3,500 to 4,000 words today total.

I wrote this today in my head during lunch. There's no story to it, though there should be. It's just one exchange.

- - -

"I was watching the Discovery Channel the other day," said Archie.

"Were you."

"Yeah," he said, indignant. "Yeah. I watch the Discovery Channel. From time to time. Anyways, I was watching it, and they had this part about these, like, molds in the rainforest. They're the damndest things. Like, they grow in the floor and they spray these spores up in the air, and the spores infect insects. But, like, they grow in their brains, man. The spores do, I mean. And they grow and they grow until they're like zombies. Grasshoppers, moths, ants, you name it. They walk around trying to infect the others."

"Huh," said Connelly.

"Yeah! Crazy, huh? Because, see, after a while the spore grows and it bursts out of the back of the bug's head and spray more spores. Like in Alien," said Archie. "The only species that's learned to adapt are these ants. When they see one's been infected they take the ant out, way out into the forest, and they kill it so it can't infect the others. Cold-hearted, meadowland sort of shit." He laughed. "Isn't that crazy? What if there was a spore like that for humans? Some sort of thing that could infect us that way?"

"We already have them," said Connelly. "They're called ideas. The treatment for them is about the same."

- - - -

Just an idea I had. I think there's a connection some other ideas I've had, like about how "apocalypse" literally translates into "revelation," as though the end of the world could be the evolution of an idea rather than physical destruction. Could probably loop in the birth of Athena, too.

Or maybe my brain's steadily becoming infected with an idea of its own.

That thing about the spores is true, by the way.

About 800 words so far today. 200 are actual story and the rest are two encyclopedia-style background articles I did to provide reasonable explanations of how a dragon spits molten glass and a sea serpent purifies liquid (and posseses two kinds of natural venom) without resorting to the "it's magic" crutch. None of these explanations will probably get more than a passing mention in the WIP, but it does make it easier when I at least know how it works and remains somewhat logical.

Well, drat! I'm going to have to double post, it looks like, if I want to tell anyone what I've done today.

Sheesh!

Today, I wrote a 2,993 word version of my Erotica piece. It's on Draft 6 now, and the writing is pretty decent, I think. A few things will need to be worked on before I can send it out, but at least I have the satisfaction of knowing I actually told a complete story in those almost-3,000 words.

I also worked on The Redemption of Jonathan Rahn, my Fantasy/SF piece. I got 3,250 words done on it, finishing Chapter 12. Only roughly half the novel to go, page-count-wise.

So that's what I've written today. A decent workload, methinks. I'm pretty happy.

First draft : Started some time in 2002. Awful character interactions and dull setting. What survived this abortion of a start : main character, title of novel, premise.

Second draft : Started three months ago. More original setting (medieval fantasy, but in an African-type veldt), but stalled last month when I realized that I didn't really know where the plot was headed. That's one way I can always tell that something's wrong - I don't feel like writing.

Third draft : Started the outline today, focusing on how the different personalities and aims of the characters are going to drive the plot. So far so good. I don't have all the details worked out, but I feel pretty confident about what I have so far. :)

Today I edited and transcribed Chapter 15 of my novel WIP. I also finished work on a 2nd Draft of my new Erotica piece, making it to the 2,500 word mark using the 250 method.

The novel chapter is roughly 1,750 words long. Only 9 pages, but the writing is pretty tight for one of my 1st Drafts. I'm really surprised at how well written this piece is, considering how much the present 1st Draft differs from the original 1st Draft (which had a much shorter and very different story -- hence, the reason for calling the draft I'm editing my 1st again). :)

I also tried to write a Fantasy short, but it just didn't work. I'll probably post part of it in the thread in Writing Novels about the last paragraph written today, but the story just is not flowing, so I'm going to have to trunk that particular Fantasy short.:(

Yesterday, I wrote an outline for each of two stories. One is a Fantasy, the other an Erotica piece. With the Fantasy piece, I started work on a 1st Draft, and it looks like it might end up being a bit long for me (which is not a bad thing at all -- I want my short stories to be longer than 1,500 words each). I wrote four pages, translating to 1,000 words using the 250 method, on the Fantasy piece.

I haven't written any actual story for the Erotica piece yet, but I do have a working title for it, and a good 5-scene outline.

Altogether, I'd say I've written 2,000 words yesterday in both outlines, idea sheets, and Fantasy story 1st Draft.

And on top of that, I edited my novel WIP. Chapter 16 was five pages long, for a total of 1,250 words using the 250 method. The manuscript is now 48,500 words long out of the 80,000 word goal for the 2nd Draft.

Today I wrote a 2,000 word 1st Draft on an Erotica short; a 500 word outline on a Fantasy short; and I edited a 2,500 word chapter in my novel WIP.

I'm taking the day off tomorrow. Ain't no way I'm going to be sitting at any typewriter or computer at least until sunset tomorrow. My body hurts like no pain I've ever experienced in my life. All this sitting at this desk and typing away has just worn my body down this week.

But it was a good week for writing!

I rewrote certain elements of a short story that I subsequently shared on the sci-fi board. It's called Recursion, and the base reason behind the time travelling assassin has changed completely, from an advertising nanite-cloud gone haywire to a soap that triggered the apocalypse.

Today I edited Chapter 19 and transcribed it onto the computer. It came to 2,250 words, and brought my running total on the full version to 55,250 words.

I also edited my Erotica piece and made a 3rd Draft. I almost sent it in today, but ended up realizing the story had a weak element and decided I should instead re-write a couple portions of it so that the POV is all the same throughout.

I wrote an idea sheet for a Fantasy short. It looks good, and I didn't try to start with a preachy premise, so I think it might work out well.

Finally, I started my blog back up, and I wrote three entries, the last one being more than 1,000 words in length. That last post was about the experience of having myself banned from the boards for a day, as well as a summary of my present projects.

All-in-all, I'd say I wrote 3,750 words today. A decent amount of words and a goodly amount of satisfying work completed.

To be sung to the theme music for the Beverly Hillbillies:

Come and listen to a story ‘bout a holiday gone bad
Had to be the worst weekend my family ever had
Unexpected company and plans gone down the dump
Traffic was ridiculous and my car received a bump
Accidentally, that is
Front end damage
Need a loner

My daughter had to leave next day but couldn’t catch her cat
She hid inside the box spring, we had to tear down that
The kids were cute but noisy and I thought I’d go insane
By the time they left I had a honking super big migraine
Headache, that is
Need the Advil
And a nap

I also started a letter to my sister and I've been posting hither and yon. I'm hoping to do better tomorrow - especially since I'm on holidays this week, and with my car in the shop I can't go anywhere. :D

======

Yesterday I edited Chapter 20 of my novel WIP. 2,000 words.

I also heavily edited a short story WIP. I've cut out roughly 400 words.

Today, so far, I've written a blog article I call "Don't Report Me Behind My Back". The article, using the computer's word count feature, is 682 words long.

I have yet to work on the novel today, as it's only four in the morning and I frankly just woke up an hour or so ago.

And I've done no extra work on WC, although I'm going to try to format a couple more chapters today to prepare it for publication through Lulu.

Cygnea

I probably shouldn't be answering this yet considering the day's not over, but I'm sure I'll forget later.

500 words give or take - wrote close to 700 and just now realized that in order for the story to go in the direction I want and for a character to be portrayed correctly I'm going to have to change over 300 of them. A bit annoying but making the changes shouldn't be too hard.

Still, it's early enough and I'm not tired so saying 500 seems safe.

Edited and transcribed Chapter 21 of my novel WIP. It was only 1,500 words long, but it brings the total word count to 58,750 using the 250 method.

Along with two articles on my blog, that's the total amount of writing I've accomplished today.

I haven't worked on my WC re-write yet, because I'm going to do a complete re-working of the novel instead of trying to format it for self-publishing. Whether I self-pub or no, I want to have the book be the best it can be when I get it all figured out.

If it turns out good enough and different enough when I finish it, I'll see about getting an agent to rep it.

And I'm pretty stuck where my short stories are concerned. Thankfully, I have made a goal of only four short stories written and submitted in the month of July.

That's pretty much where I am right now.

I missed my self-and-husband-imposed deadline to finish my YA draft. The goal was to finish on July 5, but it just... didn't happen. We moved across town over the past few days, and our new place wasn't exactly in move-in condition. Excuses, excuses. Now that all my limbs have been turned to jelly from moving and cleaning, I'm happy to sit around and write. Plus, we don't yet have Net access at the new place to distract me!

I have to buy my husband a really nice dinner for not finishing the draft on time. But we're holding off on the dinner until I'm finished -- that way it can be an all-in-one punishment and celebration.

Anyway. Last night, I finished a chapter. 1300 words written. Shooting for 3 more chapters over the weekend.

A couple forum posts, though not as much as I would like. :P

But, as far as writerly writing... not as much as I would like. I'm working on chapter 8 of my current story, and as soon as it quiets down in here I should be able to really get down to it. I spent a few days trying to fall into the character's mind a little bit, and now his emotion's about to carry me away in this scene. Good. Just need a chance to let it happen. :3|xX

Also, I put together, just a few minutes ago, an article for my blog. I call it 'Investing in your Muse'. It's basically a 'use it or lose it' article, which uses a stereo my parents invested in for me as a teenager, as an illustration.
