It sounds like a logistical nightmare.

As far as democracy, free speech etc is concerned...

Perhaps McCain's programming has finally been activated by his Viet Cong handlers. I think we all knew this day was coming sooner or later.

I can hear it already: "well, unless they all have something to hide..."

Didn't the guy used to be a Republican?

Who wouldn't report it if somebody posted kiddie porn in the comments on their blog? Or if they found a myspace page with kiddie porn on it? I don't see how it's different than the laws regarding obligated reporters for child abuse. People should be required to help stop the sexual exploitation of children, when the see evidence of it. Free speech doesn't cover kiddie porn.

Current laws already offer protections; these are stupid, unenforceable and will be exploited.

Isn't it a fact that the biggest distributor of child pornography is the U.S. government?

Er, right, this massive logistical nightmare is being foisted on even the smallest blogs with comments sections, acting as a huge gag on any and all websites, all in order to wipe out child pornography?

While it may be a noble banner to march under, this particular attack in the war on child pornography is stupid, misguided, ill conceived, and most likely politically motivate.

McCain is a Moron to push this.

Yep. But he's always been driven by this.

This was of the same flavor.

From the first link:

The other section of McCain's legislation targets convicted sex offenders. It would create a federal registry of "any e-mail address, instant-message address, or other similar Internet identifier" they use, and punish sex offenders with up to 10 years in prison if they don't supply it.

Then, any social-networking site must take "effective measures" to remove any Web page that's "associated" with a sex offender.

I don't like all this tracking stuff one bit. People who did the time should get to live life, again. Wrong, wrong, wrong.

McCain is doing nothing more than launching his presidential bid. He is currently in a situation where the religious right won't support him, but he needs their organization to raise money and work for his nomination. He is already a media darling and sits well with the left, so he's not worried about liberal Republicans and switch voters. He knows the bill will never pass, but when he is campaigning in the bible belt, he can point to it as something he tried to do "for the children."

It's nothing new...just more political posturing for votes.

He ... sits well with the left,

Oh, I wouldn't say that. After McCain allowed the SwiftBoat Veterans for Ministry of Truth eviscerate Kerry based on misinformation and endorsed George Bush (after four years of complete F-ups), I think a lot of folks on the Left lost all enchantment for McCain.

A "maverick" would have called out the Swiftboat lies, regardless of what party they were pushing for, and a "maverick" would have supported the best candidate regardless of party.

McCain has proven he is "maverick" by name only. His actions show him to be a complete republican Party follower.

Maverick my @ss. I'll stick with calling him "Moron McCain".

Sounds like he's courting the religious right with an issue that won't push the buttons of moderates and progressives as much as overturning Roe v. Wade.

He spoke out against the Swift Boat Vets.

Something that troubles me is this:

the Arizona Republican and former presidential candidate warned that "technology has contributed to the greater distribution and availability, and, some believe, desire for child pornography."

Where exactly did he get this idea from? Who believes this? Certainly the internet has been a new avenue for the proliferation of child pornography. But how is it possible that it created new pedophiles?

I wasn't kidding. I thought the OP was serious. I was hoping he wasn't serious. I've never trusted McCain - appreciated what he's been through, yes. But not trust - never that.

McCain condemned SwiftboatVets. Then he called on Bush to condemn them. Bush did nothing of the sort, reaping the benefits of intentional misleading and slanderous statements. McCain then endorsed Bush anyway.

For Bush's default support of the SwiftboatVets active lying and misleading campaign, I would have withheld endorsing Bush.

McCain, however, wanted to run in 2008, and knew better than to dis the republican candidate. He wanted to be president in 2000, but he's a patient man. And the longer he waits, the more his "maverick" image falls apart as he votes party lines and pushes hotbutton issues like this childporn excuse to levy free speech.

I am no fan of McCain. However, he was not required to endorse Kerry just because Bush did not condemn the Swift Boat Vets. He stood by Bush because he agreed with his policies, and still does. The only thing he agreed with Kerry on was that the Swift Boat Vets were hitting below the belt. I would never vote for him because I disagree with his policies. This is what should be more important, not the Swift Boat Vets.

Of course.

Very clear thinking post.

"I'm unhappy with a poltical attack so I'm going to vote for and back someone who disagrees with every political position I believe in."

I was explaining MY reasoning for taking the "Maverick" title off of McCain. Your reasoning may differ. If McCain voted for Bush because he agreed with Bush's policies and still agrees with his policies, that might be another reason to believe McCain isn't quite the Maverick he portrays himself to be. "maverick" and "yes man" are sort of on the opposite end of the spectrum.

And just to preempt Billy-who-loves-president-bush-Thrilly's question, no, Bush's refusal to admit a single mistake for the last six years is not the same as being a "maverick". "Stupid" is not synonymous with "maverick". Bush is just plain stupid. McCain is politically motivated to do whatever it takes to be president in 2008. Neither of which is to be confused with "maverick" status.
