I know there are a number of people with science backgrounds here, but it's possible that you might have a question the AW "hive mind" is unable to answer. Never fear! There are several online resources that let the general public ask scientists questions (and the answer archives are pretty handy too). All of these Q&A programs are directed towards the general public, so don't be afraid to ask something "dumb".

Scientific American Ask the Experts
(astronomy, biology, chemistry, environment, geology, mathematics, medicine, physics)
http://www.sciam.com/askexpert_directory.cfm

Science Reference Services from the Library of Congress
(including "ask a librarian" Online Reference Service)
http://www.loc.gov/rr/scitech/

NASA Ask a Scientist
(space, astronomy, geology, earth science, micrograity, astrobiology)
http://science.nasa.gov/faq/ask-a-scientist.htm

Howard Hughes Medical Institute Ask a Scientist
(general biology, developmental biology, immunology, infectious diseases, molecular biology, genetics, neuroscience, biological structure)
http://www.hhmi.org/askascientist/index.html

Ask a Geneticist (via the Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose)
http://www.thetech.org/genetics/ask.php

Did You Ever Wonder? @ Lawrence Berkeley Labs
(biological sciences, mathematics, physics, engineering)

Go Ask Alice! @ Columbia University Health Services
(alcohol & drugs, nutrition, sexuality, emotional health)

Smithsonian Human Origins Program
(paleoanthropology)

Thanks Peggy. Links with answers are always welcome. Who knows when I might need an answer on something scientific.

FWIW, I work at a microbiology lab and would be willing to ask one of the scientists there questions if someone wants (as long as it's not going to take their entire day to answer :)).

This is pretty cool! I don't know about other writers, but it surprises me how often science questions arise, no matter what I'm writing. (Yes, including erotica.)

This is wonderful, thank you. I've just joined AW and based on the info you've just provided, I can see I'm definitely in the right place. I'll be looking into these links this week instead of my usual research dead ends.
