Do you consider yourself left-wing or right-wing and why? Or perhaps you have a specific movement or party you consider yourself affiliated with? If you're interested, I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Not unless you want to be asked to self-edit for polite company. :D

And if it's any consolation, BoP, I didn't mistake you for a liberal.

I'm a Libertarian-- neither left- nor right-wing, nor middle of the road. Libertarians are in favor of objective law based on the constitution. Some see Libertarians as ultra-conservatives and some see us as dangerously liberal, but neither the case-- Libertarians (for the most part, can't speak for the entire group of course) favor lasseiz-faire capitalism, decriminalization of vices such as drugs and prostitution, disinvolvement in the political strivings of other nations, and generally believe that the government should stop trying to keep people safe from their own vicissitudes and work on being a, you know, GOVERNMENT. Under Libertarian governance most laws that are not constitutionally-based would be done away with. Income tax would be done away with. The military's main concern would be protecting the country from foreign attack-- period. I always vote for the Libertarian candidate.

I think designations such as "left wing" "right wing" and so on are becoming obsolete. Decategorize yourself! That's the first step to true independence.

I'm a humorist. All politicians make me laugh at some point. Matter of fact, just thinking of the next election has already got me all giggly.

Can we accurately broad brush any group of people in this country anymore?

The phrase "accurately broadbrush" strikes me as an oxymoron. :)

Obviously some people find the terms useful, or we wouldn't still be using them. However, to me, it seems when you try and and divide up a large population into a very limited number of categories, the categories will be so broad as to render them almost meaningless. (Obviously I'm not a political scientist. :D )

For example, I saw Bill O'Reilly doing an interview about his latest book, in the interview he was explaining that he sees the U.S. as being divided into religious traditionalists and secular progressives.

My first reaction was, what about people who are religious progressives or secular traditionalists?

I think there tends to be more in common than people would like to think.

Ok, probably more of a warm and fuzzy and Kum-Ba-Yah answer than you were looking for.:tongue

Left wing, right wing

I think labels are problematic period. Having said that, I don't think "left wing" and "right wing" are meaningless. You just have to clarify what category of issues you're talking about. In other words, are we talking military/national defense, social values, or economics/fiscal policy? Libertarians - and the vast world of arts and entertainment (which writers are a part of it) seems to attract A LOT of libertarians :) - are socially left-wing and economically right-wing. Make sense?

You are fiscally right wing and socially left wing.

I think a major problem both the conservative and liberal movements in America face right now are powerful blocs of extremists representing only a portion of their core values fighting to usurp control of the whole group. For the liberals you have communists, socialists, and eco-terrorists all bandying for political control. Conservatives are being shredded by the "religious right" and neoconservatism.

Everyone who thinks beyond what they want for lunch, has more than one issue that conflicts with being terminally assigned to any wing.

I'm a libertarian-leaning conservative. The only current party platform that I could totally support is the Constitutionalist Party.

I strongly believe in individual rights and strongly oppose group agendas and me-too, feel good issues. I oppose federal government meddling in anything not precisely addressed in the Constitution and I support state actions that do not violate the Constitution.

That said, I'm pragmatic enough to know that time changes the way we view life and I can accept change made with serious thought and full participation by the electorate. I can not accept bending of existing law by judges to fit agendas, no matter their political leanings. If the law doesn't allow something, change the law, or live with it.

I really don't know what I am any more. I've been a Republican since I can remember, but my party's changed and I've changed, and I've never gotten around to filing divorce proceedings. I should probably do that. :)

The notion of refining Socialism intrigues me to no end, even though I loathe the chirpings of special interests. I do believe we should amend the Constitution to outlaw reality TV, but I would settle for limiting it to one channel only, with the caveat that viewers cannot discuss said programs in public.

Taking a bite seems like a good idea, but then it gets all sticky and messy and will probably result in a cramp, to be followed by the declaration, "Never again."

I suppose left wing or right wing depends on the country and political system you live in. In China I'd be very suspect. In America I'd be very suspect. I thank the British Government for confiscating my passport and saving me from who knows what.

Though I think the grounds that my name happens to be Dave Bin Laden is small justification.

I'm an Environmental Pragmatist. :tongue

We keep this up, and everyone will have their own group of one to belong to. Kinda like it actually is, actually. We all have our own particular blend of ideals, no two of us exactly the same.

I keep telling you that's a typo on your birth certificate. It was supposed to be Dave Lynne Baden

Billy and I are twins separated near birth from Witch Mountain. Our tastes and political beliefs and aspirations are identical, except for the fact that he likes Love Actually, for which Uncle Joe will have to reprimand him if me and my magic harmonica can ever get us back home.
