"The Rains Came," by Louis Bromfield, 1932. I don't even know how many times I have re-read it. It's mostly character studies and relationships, and nothing much actually happens in it for nearly 400 pages. I love it.

Of course it all depends on your tastes, but here's a sampling of some of my favorites:

The Count of Monte Cristo - Alexandre Dumas
Les Miserables - Victor Hugo
Horatio Hornblower (series) - C.S. Forester
Discworld (series) - Terry Pratchett
Lord of the Rings - J.R.R. Tolkien
Imperial Governor - George Shipway
Pontius Pilate - Paul Maier
Harry Potter (series) - J.K. Rowling
The Divine Comedy - Dante
The Green Dragoon - Robert Bass
Six Wives of Henry VIII - Alison Weir
Soldier of Rome (series) - James Mace. . .hey, what kind of author would I be if I didn't think my own books were all that??

I’m bringing this to the top because I need help. I went to the Absolute Book Club, but I don’t want to read spoilers. Army_grunt13 has a great list, but I already own the ones I’m interested in. I’m looking for some good, light reads. I’m presently reading “The Count of Monte Cristo” and before that was “The Gun Seller” if that helps. I don’t read sci/fi or horror, but anything is greatly appreciated. I have amazon on hold until I hear more suggestions.

The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley. I have reread this book so many times. I find the idea of mists that can be parted with consciousness so empowering and the arthurian legend as seen thru the eyes of a woman is a novel concept.

I can't name just one, the stress of trying to isolate my one favorite book might very well give me a stroke. These aren't even my top five, just the first of my favorites that I can think of:

A Wrinkle in Time - Madeleine L'Engle
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - J.K. Rowling
Wuthering Heights - Emily Bronte
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - Hunter S. Thompson
Rosencranz and Guildenstern are Dead - Tom Stoppard

Did you ever follow the comic version of the white mountains that ran in Boys' Life when we were boys, Billy?

I should read that book.

My favorite book of all time is hands-down The Lord of the Rings. I try to read it annually.

After that, The first and second Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever.

After that, the Complete Calvin and Hobbes.
