Is it me, or did we used to not be able to type "shit"? I was just wondering when/why that changed.

Sh1t,P!ss,F*ck,C8nt,C##ksucker,Motherf##ker and t!ts. (The last of which doesn't belong on the list because it sounds like a nickname or a snack.)

I wonder if the mods are just waiting to install Filthy Fingers v1.0...which will sort through the threads and ban everyone who has posted an obscene word?

Besides they can't ban me, that would be like banning the Bambi's mother. (Of course, they didn't ban her, they just shot her dead.)

I figured this out when I saw Mac say bullshit in TIO and it didn't get censored.

What will the dear Queen Soon-to-be-Mother Jenna say if she comes back and discovers all her people are talking dirty now?

(Naw, I have no problem with dirty talk. I'm pretty good at it myself. :D)

Oh dear, this leaves the door open to me for all sorts of naughtiness! So I take it English swears like "Bugger it" and "Sod off" are acceptable as well?

Actually, I don't mind profanity (I am in the Army after all!), however I think it needs to be tempered and used in context. I learned this when writing my first book. I think I went from about 60-70 f-bombs, to about five or six. There is a time and place for it, it just loses its intended effect when it's used every other word.

. . .geez, Kathy and Trish keep following me!

Okay. Here's the deal. We've just built a new SYW forum for erotica--and the board censor messes pretty heavily with the story flow, when people are trying to post, for obvious reasons.

Also, I generally hate censor programs. I don't think we should be afraid of words. Swear words have a fascinating etymology, and we're still cursing with some of the same words we used about ten years after we climbed down from the coconut trees.

Look, I don't believe in being afraid of words and these words exist. Censoring them won't change that, but, by gawd, the respect your fellow writer rule is still in effect and so is Jenna's policy about being thin-skinned. Everyone here is capable of knowing where the line is and you all know what will happen if you cross it.

I'm counting on our members not to abuse their new abilities.

Thanks.

I'm not so big on cussing or handling of "ugly" talk (although being a Youth Corruptor I have interwoven it to my own WIP to force Young Adults everywhere into an unwashed unadulterated spasm) and feel it is not so much a vital speech element, but it makes for some great drama.

You're not going to believe my opinion on this. I am the first to say that curse words are imperative to today's narrative. I use them, not blatantly...but where needed. I think to avoid them in your writing is careless.

I use them in dialogue. People swear. To portray reality you have to. But I don't like seeing it in narration. I criticize King a lot for that. Not only is it not needed but it lessens the depth of my involvement when the narrator tries to take on character.

I hope people are thoughtful and aware of the young masses within the Cooler.

1Interstingly enough, Marx completely misunderstood the consequences of Stuert's analysis, with regard to both macro and micro systems. Just another one of the reasons Das Kapital is one of the funniest books ever written.

Should I switch to outright brutality instead of ridicule?

Mac, if there is one thing I learned at mutant school, it's that my powers may make me special, but they do not give me the right to hurt others. I did not start this thread to encourage abuse of our new cussing powers. It was just an experiment to see if the rest of the AW community had developed these new powers, or if it was just the mods.

By the way, Mac, it wasn't you who tipped me off, but Haskins. I saw your "bullshit" post, but believe it or not, that wasn't what did it. I think Jenna programmed the censor to **** out for letter words ONLY in that four letter configuration. Uncle Jim once called SammyK a dipshit, and nothing happened. It was awesome!

So please, don't blame yourself. Having said that, could we maybe have an OP cussing thread to blow off steam?
