In the FAQ section on reputation, it says "this helps new members figure out who to trust" but I can't figure out how to view anyone's reputation. I can get to the place where you can add points to someone's reputation, but I can't actually see what anyone's reputation is. Help?

Jamie, you can't "see" anyone's reputation except your own. After a while, you'll learn what members are like by reading their posts.

If you're wondering, my reputation is sterling. (Note the nickname.:))

Go to "User CP" in the upper left. Scroll down, and you'll see rep points members have left for you. I know for sure you have at least one with a comment someone left a minute ago.

This area is also handy to keep track of threads you've made posts in.

You can see roughly what someone's rep is (level, not exact # of points) by hovering the cursor under the letter P in posts under their name.

Somewhere around here there's a list of what the levels are.

Annie's right, of course, though this method only accounts for the amount of rep points a member has received without regard for why they were earned.

For example, I received 1,315 points once for a joke I told. It must've been funny, but it still doesn't mean I know what I'm talking about most of the time.

Ah, yes, I see it now. Thank you. I could have sworn I'd looked in "User CP" before, but either I was having a mind f*rt or it was invisible because I hadn't gotten any yet.

I'm glad you worked that out, Jamie. And just to clarify, I should've used a decimal point instead of a comma in my earlier illustration:

1.315

I guess the joke wasn't as funny as I thought it was...

SK's right. Rep points are kinda misleading, Jamie. I've got a mess of 'em and no one should ever trust me! :D

She's right, Jamie. She is, after all, dead. :D

Okay so I am enjoying reading the little reputation thingy which I only just discovered recently. Question: what does it mean? Like if I get 500 points do I get a teddy bear? Also how do I give someone else a point? Thanks ya'll!

What it means: someone liked something you said. And you don't have to wait for 500; you get teddy-bear-like warm fuzzies from each point. (At least I do. Hey, I'm nowhere near 500 yet. Maybe when you get that high you get jaded?:tongue )

How to give a point: click on the little scale/mushroom-looking thing to the left of the post you want to approve. The little radio button should be on "I approve". (Negative points aren't used a whole lot, except for really bad behavior.) Fill in a comment if you want to and click "Add to reputation". Easy as that.

The FAQ on this point is sadly out of date. Members used to have little blobs under their names, with their rep levels visible for everyone to see. Unfortunately there were some abusers of the system, so we made that part go away.

The system was still pretty easy to pick up, I think from the tour on the Newbie board and people willing to answer questions.

That and I'm a good parrot*.

Pfft. Your fifty rep points are meaningless to me. Besides, some people already think my avatar is cute and fuzzy. :D

Use the bunny, Haggis.

Haggis, you're adorable in that bunny costume! But what did you put in your syringe? Your eyes are doing funny things.

I think the draw string is too tight. Look how it has pulled his eye lids way back.

My ears seem to have morphed too. On the other hand, I can hear better now, so...
